January 10, 2021: And Then There Was None

posted in: Bears | 1

I hoped you enjoyed your extra week of Bears football. Actually, I did. I looked forward to something all week. I wrote about it. I prepared the right way today. Me in my Butkus jersey, my son in his Payton jersey, a bunch of Bears stuffed animals joining us on the couch ready to watch the game. Yeah, we tossed the football around, we played music, I watched highlights of the Bears Giants, Bears Rams, and Bears Patriots from the Super Bowl year. It was a very nice Sunday. What? You didn’t expect them to win, did you? Oops…

Any game the Bears take the field I believe they have a chance to win, yes, even this one. I had hope; I thought it was possible… maybe not realistic, but there was a chance. The game started out fine enough, with the Bears holding on their opening drive. The Saints did eventually take the 7-0 lead before Mike Tyson dropped a sure fire TD pass. It shouldn’t have been the deciding factor in the game, but when you miss a chance like that, early in the game, it does have an effect. Still, there was plenty of time left; the defense was getting its mojo back, minus Eddie Jackson of course. Yet the offense returned to the offense we know and hate. When facing a good defense, this should have been expected.

It wasn’t like the Bears were 100%. Missing Roquan was huge; maybe everybody didn’t realize this, all those folks who didn’t vote to make him a deserving all-pro, but we knew. Mooney, whose role had grown over the season, was another big loss. And then there was one of the best defensive rookies in the NFL, Jaylon Johnson, who I thought was going to play, sat out as well. We learned some stuff in their absence. I like that Vindor kid; Shelley not so much. Gipson had a nice game at S for us, while Eddie Jackson played another one to forget. Still, the defense played OK against a hall of fame QB with a little left in the tank, one of the best RBs in the league, and the return of one of the best WRs in the league; it’s a pretty good big 3 playing in New Orleans. The defense did about as much as it could.

Yes, the focus was back on the offense, as it was for most of the year. An offense when you looked closer, was not very good, regardless of the late season success. Trubisky is who we thought he was; he’s an average QB. He does well against below average defenses, not so much against above average defenses. Allen Robinson was absent for most of the game, for the 2nd straight week. Anthony Miller inexplicably lost his cool; Javon Mims, Wims, whatever, rewarded us for keeping him on the team after his stupid fight during the season by dropping a TD pass. Kmet was called for a ridiculous penalty, while Graham celebrated his return to New Orleans with a worthless TD as time expired. There wasn’t much room for Montgomery to run, and that about summed it up.

It was fun while it lasted; I wouldn’t trade making the playoffs for anything. Hopefully whoever will be back for the Bears gained some valuable experience. There will be changes, rightfully so. Who will stay, who will go? Who should stay, who should go? Now is the time to talk about it… and then there was none…

Went pretty much as expected. Pretty surprised tho at the lack of AROB…..again. What the hell were they thinking. And with the defense forgetting their high school tackling skills, we basically had no chance. But, at least they made it too the playoffs again, even tho they ‘backed-in’.
