How much is a World Series title worth to you? The Astros will pay $5 million, 1st & 2nd round picks the next 2 years, and a year suspension for their GM & manager. Although the penalty is unprecedented, it really doesn’t seem that bad. Was it worth it?

$5 million is a bench player; that’s nothing. The draft picks? Yeah, that is bad, but there are no guarantees with those picks. The suspensions? The owner fired them anyways. If the World Series title isn’t taken away for that year, what does it really matter? Personally, I think a 1 year ban from the postseason would have been a better punishment.

Where is the line drawn for cheating? The stealing of signs has been taking place for as long as baseball has been around. When a runner reaches 2nd base, teams must change up their signs in order to try to avoid this from happening. There are folks watching the 1st & 3rd base coaches, trying to pick up some type of idea of what’s going on. Watching the manager in the dugout send in signals to the catcher maybe… Everyone is always trying to get an edge. All of these examples are acceptable? Using technology, which is the way of the world nowadays, to do the same thing, leads to this?

The steroid era… there are many of them that have been kept out of the Hall due to their “cheating”. The corked bats… I remember Sosa getting busted for that. Baseball is not the only sport where this occurs. Heck, look at the damn Patriots. All the flopping around in the NBA is a form of cheating, no? What about hockey? In every sport, on all levels, especially the highest level, there will be teams looking to find a competitive advantage. Where is the line drawn for cheating?

Cheat: act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, especially in a game or examination. What are we teaching our kids about this? I know my son, even at 7, is very in tune with it. We haven’t talked about the Astros yet, but he knows about Sosa. He knows that he did cheat, so just because he has the most HRs in Cubs history, is not his favorite player. He asked about the other famous Cubs; he asked if they ever cheated. Ernie Banks is his favorite Cub of all time. I’m amazed at how even at my son’s age, how much the coaches are zoned in on winning; pushing the limits of fairness within the game to get an edge. I guess I shouldn’t be. Why would I be surprised if there are grown men doing it at the professional level. I’m going to teach my son that cheating is not the way to go. Yet, I know he will have to deal with it, whether in the classroom or playing sports. There will be pressures; I hope he makes the right decisions.

And what about the Houston Astros fans? How do they feel about it? I’m sure they wouldn’t trade that first World Series for anything, more than willing to take that slap on the wrist, as long as they don’t take the title away from them. Houston cheats, but as long as they keep their World Series, it’s all good, huh? What if the Cubs were found to have cheated in 2016? You hear the stories about the Red Sox now; there were rumblings about steroids with Manny and Big Papi back during the first 2 titles. Where does it end? I guess that’s a common theme in Boston; no wonder they have all those titles. Or maybe they’re just doing it better than everybody else…

Who’s clean? I’d like to think that most players & teams try to do it the right way, especially my teams. Yes, I want to see them win badly, but to have to cheat to win? Nah… that’s OK. I’d rather lose the right way, then to win the wrong way. What does that make me, knowing that there are people who don’t play by those same rules; that will try to win at any and all costs. I love to win and consider myself very competitive, but cheating??? That just ain’t right.
