January 13, 2021: Coaches Corner

posted in: Bears | 1

OK back to the Bears offseason. We have established what the first steps need to be as we prioritize finding a franchise QB: let Trubisky walk & fire Pace. Once that is done, we need to sign a free agent QB and draft a QB. OK, that’s done; now what? Well, what about the coaches corner? Plenty of fire Nagy folks out there, with Pagano a close second. What should we do here?

Let’s start with the head honcho. Were we sold a fake bill of goods? Has Matt Nagy met the initial expectations of being an offensive genius? The answer to that question, which nobody should object to, is no… hell no. The real question is why not… Let’s go back to the initial conversation about the QB, the most important position in all of sports. Have the Bears done a good job addressing this position? No; 1 drafted QB in 6 years is not the answer, unless of course that 1 draft pick was THE guy. Did we draft the guy with that one pick? No; Trubisky has proven that he is an average QB, if that. This draft selection happened BEFORE Matt Nagy arrived, meaning, he had absolutely no input into this decision. Of course when he got here, he hyped it up; what else could he have done? As time went on, and we may never know this 100%, did he realize, just like all of us, that Mitch wasn’t the guy? I imagine so; I imagine this lead to the quick trigger pulling him earlier this year. Still… if he was such a genius, you’re going to tell me there was nothing, no offense that he could have drawn up that Mitch and the rest of the guys could have run successfully? That’s hard to believe; maybe Nagy isn’t all he was cracked up to be. He finally took a step back this year, handing the reigns to the OC, Bill Lazor, making him do his job; it went about the same, meaning, great against sub-par defenses and lousy against good ones. Common denominator here?

What about on the defensive side of things? Certainly losing Fangio was a bad thing, a lot worse than any of us could have expected. Again, I expected great things from Pagano. I mean, he walked into an absolutely loaded defense, which since he’s been here, has underperformed. Last year was not good; this year was better. But overall, although still solid… I mean, how can they not be with the personnel on the field… they underperformed. Not enough “splash plays”… turnovers, defensive TDs, and the such. I’m going to point to coaching there. So if Pace is the first guy gone, and Trubisky the 2nd, then Pagano needs to be the 3rd.

Back to the head coach and the offense. Is this offense built in such a way where you need a specific type of QB? Will this offense only work with a franchise QB? If that’s the case, staying status quo will not mean much for next year, assuming the Bears don’t sign THE guy, and obviously will need time for the drafted guy to develop. Having THE guy makes everything easier. But what about when you don’t have the guy? Did Nagy and Lazor get the most out of this offense? Opposite from the defense, the personnel on the field on this side of the ball was nowhere near as talented, plus the QB and all…

And what about the accountability out there? Wims, Miller acting like dopes. Other guys, many other guys, talking a lot of ying yang without having done much to back it up. Just play the game, and WIN… then talk. Don’t think the Bears were good enough to run their mouths; they certainly didn’t cash that check. Maybe that’s part of the “swagger” Nagy wants the boys to play with, but you got to back it up. Still 2 playoff appearances out of 3 years… which is part of the bigger 6 appearances in 21 years… Still Lovie got fired after 10-6…

All this to say I think Nagy should stay and coach the final year of his initial contract. I don’t care what other teams have done. Since we’ll have a new QB next year, hopefully, then it makes sense to bring in a new OC, so I guess Lazor can go. Bring in somebody who will challenge Nagy, not just run his offense; it’s not like we’ve had so much success with the current system that we can’t change it up. As long as Nagy is open to that, then I’m fine with him staying.

Up to date moves: Trubisky walk, fire Pace, fire Pagano, fire Lazor, sign a FA QB, draft a QB. Now let’s move on to the current roster…

I’m not sure about firing Lazor. Don’t think he was in total control. Kinda liked some of his game plans. Really liked that play that your buddy Wims let slip. That could have been a big part of the game. Maybe lose Pagano, didn’t let the D play as free and loose as they could have. Dial up more pressure more often. AND learn how to tackle. Get rid of Nagy, and pay whatever it costs to bring Tomlin or Cowher out of retirement.
