January 17, 2020: Marquee Time

As the Cubs conference rolls around, with the season soon to follow, it’s almost Marquee time. What does it all mean?

Growing up, the fact that the Cubs were always on TV, free TV, was a huge reason why I became such a huge Cubs fan. The fact that any day, all summer long, at any time, I could walk upstairs by my grandmother and watch the Cubs was huge. The fact that for a good portion of that time the Sox were NOT on free TV, made my decision on who my favorite team was pretty easy. Then there’s the whole Blackhawks thing… where I was robbed from growing up a Blackhawk fan because I was never able to watch them on TV. The reason there are so many Cubs fans is because they were always accessible to everybody… not just locally, but nationally with WGN. That all changes now, right?

At this point in my life, nothing will get in the way of me watching the Cubs. Currently, I don’t know what I will have to do to ensure I get to see every game, but I know I will do it. Like, which cable providers will have this channel? Will I be able to stream it? How much will it cost? Whatever the answers are to those questions, my answer will be the same: I’m going to do whatever I have to do to watch the Cubs. That’s me though… Depending on how much money we’re talking, what about folks that can’t afford it? That sucks. What about folks who won’t be able to find an option to watch them? That sucks. Will the Cubs miss out on a whole new generation of fans?

Like I said, it’s already a done deal for me. Thankfully, I will be able to find a way to watch them. I mean, the whole concept is pretty cool. 24×7 Cubs content?!?! Are you kidding me? Thankfully, we have a recent World Series to show off; not sure how much footage there will be from the 1907 & 1908 World Series teams. Not saying there’s not a whole lot of other great footage from Cubs games & teams over the years, I’m just saying that without the winning, without the great teams, this idea of a round the clock Cubs network loses its luster a bit. The Yankees and the YES network make it work; lots of stuff from 27 World Championships to fill the time slots. It’s not like there can be a channel like this for the Brewers and all their World Series titles… Like I said, the recent surge, the golden era of Cubs baseball could not have come at a better time for this network.

There’s a lot to think about with this new channel; there’s still a lot more to come. But when Tom Ricketts kicked off the Cubs convention talking about the Marquee network, it seems like the public opinion isn’t positive… unless that was specifically directed at Ricketts… and the Cubs zero move offseason? Who knows. All I do know, is that I want to find out all the details quickly, so I can make my plans. I hope that in the midst of all this change and pay TV that the Cubs figure out a way to not rip off a new generation of potential Cubs fans… and to not lose any lifers that may not have as many options as some of us. That would suck, and I thought we were trying not to…
