January 2, 2020: 0 For 2020

So much for being undefeated in 2020… They couldn’t even keep my fantasy going for a couple days. The Bulls and Blackhawks both kicked off the year with losses on Thursday.

I could have predicted the Bulls loss. The Jazz are a good team; they pass the ball a lot. They actually look like a team with an offensive plan. Yet, the Bulls were leading in the first half… yet, the gave it back and lost the game in the 2nd half; stop me if you’ve heard this before. It’s like the Bulls come out and give the other team their best shot, the other team takes their best shot, and when they return the favor, the Bulls crumble. 13-22 now…

Meanwhile, I really thought the Blackhawks would win late night in Vancouver. Feeling that mojo of 3 wins in a row… getting ready for the Hawks to make that playoff push… bam, flat on their faces. Well, it wasn’t exactly one of those games where the Blackhawks looked like absolute crap; they did score 5 goals. Yet, they continued to give up golden opportunities for the opposition; stop me if you’ve heard this before. Lehner could only do so much, as the dam broke, and the Canucks outlasted the Hawks 7-5 in this offensive explosion.

On this 2nd day of 2020, we were given a large dose of reality. My “sky is the limit” plans for 2020 were spit on. Let’s do another version of that 2020 plan for these guys. The Bulls will not improve on their record, and even with a very weak bottom of the East, will miss the playoffs. This is a huge disappointment, but nothing will be changed, as the same GarPaxBoylen three headed monster will be marched out next year while the Reinsdorfs continue to focus on the White Sox. The Bulls will enter the lottery and will get the 7th pick of the NBA draft, again. Stop me if you’ve heard this before.

The Blackhawks are simply not good enough to make the playoffs. They continue to have up and down streaks throughout the remainder of the season, but the ups are never quite enough to push us over the top. The Blackhawks will finish on the outside looking in for the 3rd consecutive year, and although our Hall of Fame coach had to take the brunt of the initial failures, StanBo is brought back yet again, while the Hawks watch their aging core decline, their collection of young talent put together by StanBo not be enough, and their young coach never quite able to get it going. Stop me if you’ve heard this before…

It feels like we’re caught in a rut here… unable to break the vicious cycle that is the last few seasons of basketball and hockey. All the positivity that I felt heading into a new year was snuffed out with a two loss Thursday. When will we be able to break through? I hoped the newness of 2020 would help provide a boost for these “stuck” teams. So far, not so. 0 for 2020… the beat goes on.
