January 21, 2020: One for the Books

This wasn’t just an ordinary game night at the United Center. Before this year, not much would be said for a matchup at home in January against the Panthers. But this year, with their new coach, this would be one for the books. It was the first return to the UC for the best Blackhawks coach of all time, Coach Q. On top of that, as if that wasn’t enough, we would celebrate Kane’s 1000th point before the game. Throw in 2 teams both on 5 game winning streaks, and the last game before the All Star break for the Hawks, and the stage was set for a pretty special night at the UC.

It was a walk down memory lane. To see Kane’s career celebrated before the game was pretty special. Yes, all the great shots, all the milestone goals were nice, but more than anything, were the special moments he provided us on the biggest stage. It was those games & goals against the Canucks, the Kings, the Lightning, and of course, THE goal against the Flyers that brought the memories rushing back. For many of us, he would be one of the first players’ career we actually watched unfold on our TV screens. Being blacked out for so long, I was unable to watch and enjoy other past Hawks stars night in and night out. Savard, Murray, Roenick, Chelios, Amonte, Belfour… all names I’m familiar with, all guys I’ve seen many highlights of, all guys I wasn’t able to watch play the 82 games per year. Kane, along with the other guy who will have a statue outside of the UC one day, were the first guys I watched all season long. Kane was, and continues to be, a special, special player.

Then came the Coach Q tribute. Kind of pissed they didn’t show it on TV. Fortunately, there were many options to view it on Twitter, as well as, the Panthers broadcast. It wasn’t as long as it should have been, but it too, brought the memories rushing back. Sure, they didn’t show the famous crotch grab, any middle fingers, or audio of any F bombs he would drop on the bench as he “discussed” the game with the officials, but they covered the good stuff. Again, more big goals and games on the biggest stage. The celebrations on the bench, in the locker room, and at the parades. Man, what a fricking run these guys had. When you’re talking about the Mount Rushmore of Chicago coaches, Coach Q is definitely up there. Sure, was it time to go? Maybe. But I do miss him. It was good to see him back in front of the faithful, and he rightfully got a tremendous ovation. Bravo. I wish you nothing but the best Coach Q… except tonight.

Yes, then there was the hockey game. The first period ended scoreless, as everybody was dealing with the emotions of the evening. The second period started, and the goals started coming. More on that in a second… but again, congrats to both Kane and Coach Q on this special evening. They will be forever linked in Chicago sports lore as two of the greatest to ever do it. Let’s go Hawks!
