January 22, 2020: Not So Fast

posted in: Blackhawks | 0

Feeling good, memories flowing… then the 2nd period happened. I swear, I take my dog out for a quick walk, and come back and we’re down 2-0; what the heck! It didn’t get better from there.

Winners of 5 straight, pulling within 3 points of the last playoff spot in the West, the pitchers were full of kool aid. The on and off again Blackhawks had been on, on, on lately, and the playoffs, which at times seem like a pipe dream, seemed like reality more than ever…. not so fast. Hoping to ride this wave through the All Star break, the Blackhawks were reminded that there is a still a long way to go to get into the postseason; nothing will be easy.

The Panthers looked great in the 2nd period. Lehner looked kind of lost. After the Panthers scored again to make it 3-0, I kind of thought he would be pulled; they mentioned that on the intermission show as well. Honestly, with everything going on tonight, with Kane and the return of Coach Q, I thought it would have made a lot of sense to roll Crow out for this one. Sure, Lehner has been the better goalie overall in the first half, and is my preferred long term option going forward, but on THIS night… it sure seemed like Crow would have brought a little extra to his game in goal tonight. I wonder how good Colliton is at making these decisions; Coach Q was really good at this. Don’t want to compare Jeremy to a HOF coach in Quenneville, a guy that is the best to ever coach for the Blackhawks, but on this night, it’s inevitable.

The birthday boy came through to cut it to 3-1 on a nice goal. Kirby Dach has shown a lot of promise in his first year in the league. Love his big frame; love his game. Once he fills out that frame, watch out. I mean, for God’s sake, the kid is only 19 years old!!! HBD to my bro BTW who is turning a little more than 19 years on this 22nd of January. The Panthers put that first nail in the Hawks coffin on this evening with a late power play goal. The Blackhawks penalty kill, now ranked 4th in the league, couldn’t come through, as the Panthers would open the 3rd period with a commanding 4-1 lead.

The Blackhawks weren’t done though. Unlike the penalty kill, the power play still brings up the rear of the NHL, yet it struck early in the 3rd. Why can’t we see more power plays like that? Lots of good pressure & looks ending with a beautiful redirect by Caggiula off a Gustaffson shot. The 2nd and 3rd power plays of the period for the Blackhawks looked like the crappy power plays we’re used to seeing; you can’t say we didn’t have our chances. Late in the 3rd, with an extra attacker, the Hawks pulled within one goal on a nice shot by Kane off a nice pass by Dach. The Hawks would call a time out, and try with the extra attacker one more time in the last minute. It wasn’t meant to be, and the Hawks 5 game winning streak is over.

It was a bit of a letdown on this emotional evening. Yet, I felt a lot better at the end of the game then I did at the end of the 2nd period. There are no “good losses”, but I liked the way the Hawks didn’t quit. The fact that there is no quit in this team will be the main reason why the Blackhawks will be fighting for that playoff spot until the end. With 31 games to play, there is plenty of work to be done; I’m looking forward to seeing how it all plays out. See you next month boys. Go Hawks!
