Saturday was the season opener for the 7-9 year old Sharks. If you read the title, you can guess how it turned out. Starting off with a win feels good.
It didn’t look that way for a while. After falling behind 2-0, we trailed 3-1 heading into the third period. Them we kicked it into high gear. The lineup that started that third period on offense, with our two 9 year olds on offense, and our 7 year old ice hockey kid at center, dominated. It lead to three unanswered goals, at which point the other team called a timeout. The offense wasn’t the only thing clicking that period. Our defense and our goalie, my son, held them to nothing to that point. After taking the lead, I changed lines and positions, beefing up the defense to hold the one goal lead. I’m glad that I did. They came with a flurry trying to tie it up. A couple close calls, couple nice saves, and a dive on top of the puck held them off. The last minute was pretty clean, with a close call on an insurance goal attempt. 4-3 was the final score.
Our number one draft pick scored a hat trick. My son held them to no goals in the third. The other coach’s son had a really good game almost scoring a few times. Our other 9 year old was a solid presence all game. Our other keeper had a goal and an assist. We got good efforts from our top five kids. A nice surprise came from our last draft pick, a blind pick. Had no idea who this kid was, but he can play. The one thing that will come in handy this year is depth. I’m going to really try to change up lines and put the right combos out there to keep up my side of the bargain.
