January 26, 2024: NFC Champ

The 49ers survived last weekend, and now, they get to host the NFC Championship game vs the Lions on Sunday evening in the last game before the Super Bowl. Who you got?

The Niners have been the best team in the NFL pretty much all year long. The weapons on offense, even with a QB that was not picked in the first round, is phenomenal. About that guy… personally, I love Brock Purdy. I think he’s completely legit, because if anybody could have lead this offense, then Trey Lance would still be a 49er… and sure, Shanahan is an offensive guru too, but come on… give some love to Brock, ok? The Niners defense is really really good too. They lost that one great safety, but their pass coverage is still outstanding… as long as they’re not falling down in the secondary. Their DL is great, but you can run against them, right? I think we’re going to find that out on Sunday too.

The Lions… at this point, it’s kind of hard to not think of them as a team of destiny. They didn’t necessarily dominate either of their first 2 playoff matchups. Some say they got lucky… Not sure about that. They did announce they were here by beating the Chiefs in the first game of the NFL season way back when, right? Super Bowl rematch? In fact, just for a second, any matchup would be a rematch. Ravens Lions from earlier this year when Baltimore kicked their ass. Ravens 49ers from earlier this year when Baltimore kicked their ass; see a common theme? Chiefs and Lions from the first game of the season, and Chiefs 49ers, a Super Bowl rematch. You can’t go wrong, right?

OK, back to this game. Detroit will have to run the ball; they have the horses. They have the OL, they have Monty, they have Gibbs. Pound that rock, but does anybody really stick with that strategy the whole game? We just can’t resist dropping back and throwing the ball, regardless of how successful the running game is. Do you still trust Goff, outdoors, on the road, with a Super Bowl berth on the line? Quick question: Purdy or Goff? For me, it’s Purdy. For me, the Niners are the better team, hands down. I don’t think there is a question about that. However, there is something to be said for a team on a roll, like Detroit is. We’ve seen how the fans in Detroit have been acting, and how the Lions have been winning; how will they do on the road, with their first ever Super Bowl berth on the line?

Lions +7 is my pick; I already bet it. I’d like to take the Niners on the ML in-game if possible, and try to hit both ways. I do think Detroit has a legit chance to win this game, but… you have to think the Niners pull this out somehow, some way, even if it’s ugly and close. The Lions as the underdog, with this coach, on the road… everything including the kitchen sink will be in play, which makes them a bit more scary. They’ll have to hit on some of that to have a chance, and I think they will. I think this is a FG game, so let me ask you this. Lions up by 1 point, Niners with the ball… they get into FG range, let’s just say a 45 yd FG to win. You trust Moody? Better get closer than that. Hoping I’m home to watch the 2nd half of this one. Sure, the Niners may blow them out, that’s certainly in play, but I’m thinking nail biter. This should be fun. Good luck and enjoy the games!
