Next up in the world of Baseball Seasons was 1967. They skipped 1966, the year Koufax won another MVP and lead the Dodgers back to the World Series. However, this time they were taken out by the Baltimore Orioles, who swept the Dodgers only giving up 2 runs the entire series!!! Wow. This year would feature 2 different teams in the World Series.

One thing that has been the same in all of these episodes thus far was the unrest throughout the country. We were still dealing with segregation for God’s sake… throw in the Vietnam War… I know we’re going through a lot right now in this country and world, but back then was pretty crazy too, even without social media. The thing that is just wild to me is how segregation was still alive and well only about 50 years ago; that’s only one generation. Kind of makes it easy to understand why things are still so messed up today. I mean, they’re night and day to back then, meaning a lot better today, yet it feels like it’ll be another 50 years before it gets truly better. We have to keep plugging away. The easiest thing any of us could do is to not teach hate. Let’s start there; it’s as good a place as any. OK, back to baseball.

1967 was historic from a baseball perspective as well, featuring a Triple Crown winner in baseball. Carl Yastrzemski… 44, 121, .326. It would be until 2012 that we saw another when Miguel Cabrera pulled off this feat. The Red Sox that year were a great story. Coming off a horrible year they turned it around and ended up winning the AL pennant, holding off the Twins, Tigers, and also the White Sox, who by the way had 16 straight winning seasons! As we all know from the historic drought they dealt with, the Red Sox couldn’t finish the job. Unfortunately, on the NL side of things, it was the Cardinals running away with things during the regular season.

Bob Gibson and Lou Brock were the headliners; that year they got some more help. Roger Maris, remember him, ended up in St. Louis along with unanimous MVP Orlando Cepeda. I guess you could say that team was stacked. They were dominating the World Series just like the regular season, up 3-1 against the Red Sox before Boston came back winning Games 5 & 6. It must be nice being able to send a pitcher like Bob Gibson to the mound in a Game 7 scenario. The Red Sox mustered up 3 hits in that one, as the Cardinals won the game and series.

There were some pretty good rookies of the year that year. Rod Carew and Tom Seaver took home the awards. So as Koufax retired, and Mantle winded down his career, the next round of stars would enter. It’s like a cycle, that continues today. Things are always moving forward. Yet, you can learn a whole lot from looking back. Remembering and understanding our history is critical to dealing with the present and preparing for the future. OK, what’s next…
