OK, one more skilled position to go on the offensive side of the ball. That’s kind of insulting to the offensive line though, no? By not including them in the skilled positions, are we saying they are unskilled? Well, certainly those who know understand that the war in the trenches is where it’s at. It enables all the other “skilled” guys to make things happen. Without them, it ain’t happening. But they’re next… today, we talk about my all-time Tight End.

Ditka comes to mind. One of the original at the position, I love the highlights of him bulling his way down the field, guys bouncing off him. Being an ex-Bear, plus the only coach to have won a Super Bowl for my team, plus the fact that I met him and talked to him at his restaurant back in the day, certainly gives me enough bias to do it. Love Da Coach, but he will not be that guy. I love the Tight End position. I remember meeting another ex-Bear Super Bowl winning tight end. Yes, Emery Moorehead and a bunch of his friends came to my Boys Club as part of the Super Bowl winning tour. Certainly he’s not the guy. I remember Robo Cop James Thornton, memorably named Cap Boso, and the guy we should have never traded Greg Olsen. Certainly none of these guys are in the discussion.

It’s guys like Ozzie Newsome, Kellen Winslow, Jason Witten, Antonio Gates, Shannon Sharpe, and Rob Gronkowski that are in the discussion. Most recently, Travis Kelce and George Kittle may make their way into the conversation eventually; going back in the day, other than Ditka, Jackie Smith, Dave Casper, and John Mackey are certainly worthy. For some reason, a guy that I remember being pretty awesome when I was a kid was Todd Christenson; not sure why that stuck with me. Any of these guys would be just fine lining up at either end of my offensive line, splitting out wide, or even in the backfield with Walter if we got really creative. Yet, like the Wide Receiver position, there is one guy that kind of jumps of the page; not quite as much as Jerry, but Tony Gonzalez on paper, is the greatest Tight End of all time.

It’s not all about the paper though… Tony G was more than that though. He had the size and the speed that gave defenders fits over the years. But yeah, those stats… most Pro Bowls, most receptions, most yards, and 2nd most TDs of all time at the TE position. He has no rings; his team has never even won a playoff game. By itself, this is a bit concerning, but as I mentioned before, with the amount of championship experience on this team, guys who don’t own a ring will not be frozen out. All are welcome here on my all-time NFL team, except any Packers of course.

Welcome to the squad Tony G. Now, we’ll move on to those guys in the trenches, and pick our all-time offensive line. Since these are NOT the “skilled guys”, these positions may be the hardest to pick… but, we’ll give it a shot. Let’s complete our offense next.
