January 4, 2021: Playoff Appreciation

posted in: Bears | 0

I’m so sick of hearing all these people bitch about the Bears. We made the playoffs for God’s sake! Doesn’t that mean anything to you? Yes, I know we have our problems… no doubt. Hopefully those will be addressed in the offseason, whenever that is; there’s no guarantee though… for our problems to be addressed I mean, not an offseason… that will happen eventually. Yes, everybody wants to play owner and decide what is best for this franchise; hey, I do it too. But that’s a story for another day… Today, I’m writing about some playoff appreciation… read it, embrace it, try to enjoy it…

Quick question: Last time Bears made playoffs was? Easy, 2018… doub… I’m not even going to say it. Better question: Last time before that? Cue the Jeopardy music… go ahead, look it up; I know I had to. It was after the 2010 season… remember, Cutler’s ONLY playoff appearance as a Bear. Still kills me that people think that dude was better than the average Jay he was. Yeah, don’t really want to rehash what happened that year… How about before that? That was the Super Bowl losing year of 2006-07; you’re good. And of course, we made the playoffs the year before that, another loss, this time to the Panthers. How about before that? And before that? You get my point right?

Making the playoffs ’round these parts doesn’t happen as often as it should; that’s the bottom line. Yes, it’s been a long time since that 1984-1994 stretch of making the playoffs 8 out of 11 years, including our one and only Super Bowl. Since then… 5 appearances in 25 years… pretty fricking sad huh? And now this year, will mark out 6th playoff appearance in the past 26 years; we’re moving on up!!!

I understand the frustration, believe me; I’m with you. Making the playoffs this year doesn’t guarantee any sustained success for this team with some serious questions, like GM, coach, QB for starters. But making the playoffs in the NFL should NOT be taken for granted. It’s NOT like the NBA, where an 8 seed has no chance. There have been Wild Card teams that have won it all in the NFL; not saying the Bears will be one, just saying it’s possible. Punching a ticket to the dance is not easy. The fact that the NFL playoffs are starting next weekend and that INCLUDES our Bears… shit, I’m going to enjoy it!

Yes, another week spent anticipating (dreading you say?) a Bears game. Another week to “jersey up” with my choice between Payton, Butkus, McMahon, and Urlacher; think I’m going with Butkus on Sunday btw. Another Sunday spent in front of the TV cheering for (yelling at?) my team… that’s right, MY team. There is no other choice; it’s Bear Down or nothing baby, and the fact that our season is alive for another week is a great thing… remember, doesn’t happen as much as it should… and oh yeah, you don’t think we have a chance against the Saints? If we’re on the field, we have a chance, and that’s my point.

So save me all the squabbling about all of our problems; I know what they are. Does what you or me think about those issues going to factor into the decisions that are or are not made by the powers that be? Nope. But we do get another week of Bears football; with the Rams win yesterday, that much IS guaranteed… and for that, I’m happy. I don’t care what our record is, or how we got here, the bottom line is we’re here, and you’re damn right I’m pumped up about it. Bear Down!!!
