January 4, 2024: Brutal Beats

How many brutal beats have you had? Games that you bet on that were in the bag, until they weren’t. I think all of us can recite a few, and just like other negative events, they seem to stay in our heads more than the good stuff. Well, Thursday night was time for a couple new ones for me.

The night started off well, winning the St. Louis Blues. I was about to go 2-0 on the night in the Stars Avalanche game. The Stars were leading in the 3rd period with about a minute left; game time right? I wonder how many times a team ties it up in the final minute of a one goal game… I wonder how many times the team that ties it up in the final minute ends up winning the game in OT. Well, that’s exactly what happened to me in this game. Colorado tied it up, then won in OT. A bet where I was already counting my winnings went POOF and turned into an L just that quick. Damn. OK, well, one more bet to go for the night.

I like betting on 3 games per night, if it makes sense. Certainly not going to force it, or on the flip side, not bet on more games if I like them because I want to stick to that number. There are some nights where I may only bet on 1 game; there are other nights I may bet on 8, like in the NHL the other night; I went 4-4. But I like the low, odd number… I probably shouldn’t be betting on too many games to start, and secondly, I like the odd number because the goal is to go 2-1 on the evening; it’s like in baseball, just win the series. On this evening my 3rd bet was the Golden State Warriors ML; yeah, if only I had taken the points… If you did not see what happened, I’ll give you the two second review. The Warriors were up by 18 points with 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter; I flipped to another channel. When I flipped back, the Warriors led by 4 points with about a minute left. The Nuggets proceeded to tie the game up, and when Curry turned the ball over in their chance for last minute glory, it gave Denver one more shot. The Joker got the ball, dribbled just past half court, heaved it at the rim, and banked it in… F me. What should have been a 3-0 night, turned into a 1-2 night. Beautiful.

It’s nights like this that you have to overcome to be a successful sports bettor IMO. You can’t get too down; you can’t start chasing your losses. You need to refocus, take a little break if necessary, and get back to your winning ways. I thought about taking a break, but… there are a lot of games on Friday night… haha. Until the next brutal beat… how about the opposite of that… what would that be called? Lucky score? I don’t know. On to the next…
