January 6, 2020: First Win of 2020

The Bulls couldn’t pull it off against the Celtics on Saturday night, so it was up to the Blackhawks to get us our first win of 2020 on Sunday night at the UC vs the Red Wings. And……. they did it.

It didn’t start off well. When I checked in, it was already 2-0 Red Wings. The lowly Red Wings are going to march into town and smack us? I’m sure there were a lot of Red Wings fans in attendance. After all, nowadays, this will be the only game in Chicago against the Blackhawks. I’m sure all those Michigan transplants found their way to Madison Street, even if it was the night before everyone got back to the grind. Or maybe not… maybe the Red Wings fans didn’t want to see the worst team in the NHL play their old rivals the Blackhawks. Even the last place Blackhawks have almost double the points of the Wings. Talk about a rebuild… who knows if and when that Stanley Cup matchup will ever happen.

It was far from that on this evening, but thankfully the Blackhawks woke up. The best part about this game were the guys that scored the goals: Strome 24, Sikura 24, Boqvist 19, and Kubalik 24. It was great to see all these young guys light the lamp. Sure, we’ve seen Strome do it plenty of times before, and yes, Kubalik’s was an empty netter, but still. For Boqvist, it was his 2nd career goal, and it was pretty. For Sikura, it was his first career goal; it was a long time coming.

It took 39 games for him to tally his first one. For a guy expected to come up and perform well, it was certainly a disappointment. The fact that he couldn’t find the back of the net for this long had to weigh on him; he admitted as much himself. It was cool for him to finally score one. I watched the postgame interview in the locker room; talk about relief. You almost have to feel that now, with that pressure gone, Sikura can start to regularly contribute. That would be huge for the Blackhawks.

The win put the Blackhawks above 500 again, if only by a game. They remained bunched up at the bottom of the Western Conference, 5 points out of the last playoff spot. They’re going to need to play better hockey consistently going forward. If the young guns can start to chip in, this may be possible. It will be all hands on deck if the Hawks will be able to make that push into the postseason. Beating the Red Wings is always fun; getting back into the postseason would be more fun. Next up: Flames on Wednesday night in the UC. Go Hawks!
