January 7, 2021: Ice Time

With the return of the NHL less than a week away, let’s check in with the Blackhawks. Spoiler alert: it ain’t good.

To set the table for this season, let’s start by going back to last season. What’s the most important position in hockey? Some may say the goalie. The Blackhawks had two outstanding goalies. It made perfect sense to try to get something for one of them. Although they didn’t pick the guy I would have picked, the Hawks unloaded one; good bye Robin Lehner. Again, wouldn’t have been my choice, but OK; we still have Crow. Fast forwarded to this offseason, and… they let Crawford walk too. So we go from two outstanding goalies to zero outstanding goalies; not so good. Do we have a guy that will step up and play well in goal this year? Considering how much those two carried us last year, if it doesn’t happen, the season could be even worse than we imagine.

That’s OK; we still have some young, up & coming talent on the ice. Seriously, I like a lot of the young guys, none more than Kirby Dach. I think this kid is going to be an absolute stud. If this was Bowman’s guy, I do have to credit him for that pick. In his first season, he showed flashes of brilliance; as he grows into that big, long frame of his, he’s only going to get better. Can’t wait to see him on the ice in year 2. Yeah, then he got hurt; he’s essentially out for the year. What a blow. I told you it ain’t good.

That’s OK; we still have our championship core. Kane still has that star power, Keith showed up to the rink looking like Jesus Christ, and Seabrook… well, hopefully now that he’s healthier than he’s been in a while, we’ll see some improvement on the ice. And of course we have our Captain, Serious. Love Jonathan Toews. He’s had his ups and downs in the past couple years, but he’s still rock solid in my opinion. Yeah, and he’s out too… an undisclosed illness… our for an undisclosed amount of time. The hits keep on coming, and I didn’t even mention that Nylander is out for the year too… OK, I just did.

Of course, we can all be happy that our fearless leader Bowman is still here, in his newly promoted position, guiding us through our “retool”. That’s a joke; you know that, right? Still can’t quite understand, by looking at his track record, by seeing Coach Q shown the door, by watching McDonough hit the road, that some how this guy is still here… and yes, you read that right, got a promotion! Holy Shit…

Yep, can’t wait for the Blackhawks season to start. I do have some good news. The Blackhawks will play the Red Wings 8 times this year, which not only gives us a nice renewal of the historic rivalry, but matches us up against a team predicted to be worse than us! On the flip side, no west coast late start times… that sucks. But like a lot of stuff nowadays, we’ll take what we can get. Just the fact that the Hawks will be back, is much appreciated. How will they do? Well, whatever the over under is for their win total, I’m leaning under… but maybe I’m wrong; I hope I’m wrong. It’s almost ice time! Go Hawks!
