Felt good to write this title. Yes, the Bears are back in the playoffs. I know it’s only been a one year absence, but as discussed earlier this week, it’s only our 6th appearance in the last 26 years. You’re damn right I’m excited about it.
My excitement took a little hit when I saw the opening line for this game; the Saints are favored by 10 points. That’s a lot of points for a playoff game; why so many? We played the Saints tough this year. Brees isn’t scaring anyone any more, is he? The last time we played the Saints in the playoffs, we beat them to reach the Super Bowl. The last time we played a playoff game in New Orleans, we won Super Bowl XX. I know the last two things don’t mean anything when it comes to this week, still pretty cool though. What may be more relevant is how the Saints have bowed out of the postseason in recent history. After their only Super Bowl, the Saints have went 4-6 in the playoffs, including 3 tough losses to end their season the last 3 years, with the last 2 coming in the OT variety. Although the Saints were many folks’ preseason Super Bowl pick from the NFC this year…
After further thinking about this one, I would feel really good about the Bears +10 if Roquan Smith was playing, but the Bears didn’t get into the dance just to cover the spread, right? Yeah, but if I’m questioning them covering the spread without Roquan, do I really think they can beat the Saints without him? It hasn’t been officially announced, but rumor has it that it’s a dislocated elbow, which would mean he’s done. Who the heck is going to cover Kamara out of the backfield if it isn’t Roquan? On the flip side, Jaylon should be back; Deon Bush, Buster Skrine back too? The only other injury question is on the offensive side of the ball with Mooney. He’s turned out to be an important part of this offense, even more so after Robinson’s disappearing act last week vs the Pack; you can make up for that this week Allen. Yeah, I know, I know… you can’t throw the ball to yourself and Mitch ain’t the greatest throwing it down field. OK, let’s gather some positive energy.
The homefield advantage that would be the Superdome is nowhere near the same with the absence of fans. I think I heard they would be some… still not the same. Yeah, well, you ever heard of reverse psychology? Sure, anybody that gets in the playoffs has a chance to win; that is technically a fact. This includes Da Bears, and that is the most important thing here. Getting back into the playoffs, seeing the NFL playoffs kick off and being a part of it… I’m very excited about this, regardless of the outlook for this game or the outlook if we do pull this off. I’m going to jersey up and lock into the game come Sunday 3:40pm; I’m going to enjoy the hell out of this game win, lose, or draw. I always believe the Bears can win; this game is no different.
