Hmmm… what else can we do outside on this staycation? Well, we already knocked out 54 holes of mini golf. I bought a bike finally and rode it 13+ miles, then hit a couple parks with my son later in the week. What could be next? Hiking of course.
Well, it wasn’t actually hiking; it was more like trail walking. Still, a good outdoor activity. We had to walk a couple of miles, and this time, there wasn’t really any shade. It was about 90 out, so I was sweating my ass off. We went about an hour and a half south of Chicago. On the way there, we passed something unexpected: Abraham Lincoln National Cemetary. Of course we stopped. After doing presentations about presidents in 2nd grade, plus just watching Hamilton, my son is definitely into the presidents. It hasn’t been around that long; I had never even heard of it. It was a nice surprise.
Our main destination was this hiking trail, but we also passed another surprise: the Chicagoland Speedway. Never been there before either, just popped up in the middle of nowhere. A few miles south of there was our spot. The main reason we went here was that it wasn’t too far, and it was south; typically we’re going north and/or west of Chicago. We didn’t want to make the trek all the way to Starved Rock; heard it has been overcrowded, plus it was another hour plus. We’ll get there eventually. This place definitely wasn’t overcrowded; it was empty. We didn’t see a person until about an hour in. The other main reason was for the bison. The sign told us that bison had roamed in Illinois for about 4000 years, but have been absent since early 1800s. Through a project, they introduced the bison back into Illinois back in 2015. Unfortunately, we did not see them. Being so hot, I imagine they were laid up somewhere, under a tree or something. We’ll have to return to this place at some point, maybe this time with our bikes.

Sure, it’s something we’re used to; I love it. But it’s a small sacrifice to make this year due to all that’s going on. Plus, not taking a full blown vacation saves some money too; nothing wrong with that.
OK, returning to work on Monday; still had the weekend before getting back to the grind. I definitely needed this time away, and definitely enjoy every weekend, especially the last 2 days of my time off. What else is going on?
