July 19, 2020: Almost Back

It’s almost back. This Friday will be the return of baseball. Are you ready?

Who the hell isn’t ready? COVID or not, let’s get this thing rolling. OK, ok… yes, the health and safety of the players and everyone involved with the return of games is most important; no doubt about that. However, I’m thinking with all the testing going on with the teams, the reduced travel schedule, all the precautions, they’re going to be just fine.

Yes, every team will not have every player, as there are those guys who have opted out. We’ve talked about this before; this is a personal decision. This is a personal decision that is made a bit easier based on the financial situation of that individual. Most MLB players are, should be, pretty good financially. This gives them options re: to play or not to play. These options don’t exist for all of us. This is the way of the world. Like I said, we’ve been through this.

As far as how the Cubs and Sox will do this season, I’ve talked a bit about this as well. Any team, whether it be grizzled playoff veterans like the Cubs or upcoming, hungry youngsters like the Sox, could get hot. You get hot in a 60 game season, if you get really hot, you’re in. Anybody who gets in has a chance. It will be interesting to see it all play out. But I will stand by this statement: any team that ends up winning the World Series this year should have an asterisk… except if it’s the Cubs.

It’ll suck not going to the park. Maybe we will make our way down to Wrigley at some point; in fact, I’m pretty sure we will. Not sure if we will be allowed to play catch outside the park, or if we’ll have to stand in the street with a radio and our gloves, waiting for a potential home run ball, but we will be there. I’m sure we won’t be alone. Are the rooftops going to be open? Don’t think I’ll get approval for that, but who knows. Will fans be let in at some point? Probably not… not this year. This is just another sacrifice we’ll have to make this year. In the big scheme of things, although it’s something that I love to do, it’s not that huge of a deal.

I’m just missing sports. Early on, I was hopeful that everything would resume by June 1st; well, I was about 2 months off. Don’t these last 2 months feel like they’ve lasted forever? Shit, does anybody remember anything that happened before COVID descended down upon us? These last 5 months have not been the best; we’re still not done.

But baseball is almost back! In fact, hold on, the Cubs and Sox played on Sunday night at Wrigley. Preseason, exhibition, whatever… it’s great to see them back on the field. I did tune in for a bit…
