July 2, 2014: Recruiting

We started the busy day in sports with the US getting eliminated from the World Cup, losing to Belgium 2-1.  OK, wake me in 4 years… ok, I’ll probably try to catch some more of the World Cup even with the US gone.  It was exciting while it lasted, and Tim Howard, you were great.  The Cubs won their 2nd game in a row in Boston, and are now 1-0 in the 2nd half of the season.  The Sox got swept in their doubleheader.  The Hawks signed Brad Richards to a one year deal.  But today, we’re going to focus on a special visitor who arrived in our city this morning.

As we welcomed Carmelo Anthony to Chicago on the first stop of his 2014 free agent tour, there are many questions.  Will he come to Chicago?  Is management doing everything they can to get him?  Should Rose be helping the cause?  What is plan B?  I’m kind of sick of it all, and I got answers to all those questions.

Carmelo SHOULD come to Chicago.  If it’s all about winning like he says, there is no better place than right here.  Aside from calling up 2 of your all star buddies, and trying to make another “superteam” (and I’d even argue against that), there is no better chance of him winning a title next year than right here in Sweet Home Chicago.  Houston?  Dallas?  Are you serious?  New York?  Give me a break.  If winning is #1, then you’ll be a Bull next year.

What else should the management do to get him here?  I’m sure they had a pitch for him, including pictures of him in a Bulls uniform with the NBA Finals trophy, but honestly, this kind of stuff sells itself.  Carmelo’s no dummy.  He’s seen it playing against the Bulls the past few years.  You take the team that destroyed the hapless Knicks (which isn’t saying that much), but you add a healthy Rose and Carmelo… the Bulls would back to being the beasts of the east… however the Heat looks.  With a starting lineup of Rose, Butler, Melo, Taj, and Noah, it doesn’t get much better than that on any team.  So what if he is unsure?  What is he doesn’t WANT to come here?  We bring in the recruiting heavyweight DRose.

Not!  I think it’s ridiculous how people are ripping him about not wanting to recruit.  Since when are players recruiters?  Since LBJ made some calls to his buddies about playing together?  Now, DRose should go on a campaign to attract FAs?  That’s a load of crap.  He’s said nothing but good things about Carmelo, and any other FA for that matter, and he was present to meet with Carmelo today, along with Joakim and Taj, but people seem like they want him to get on his knees and beg this guy to come to Chicago.  I don’t think so.  That’s not DRose’s style, nor would I want him to do that.  Is Derrick Rose really going to sway someone’s opinion of coming to Chicago or not?  If people don’t want to come here, then oh well.  Do we really want someone playing on the Bulls that really doesn’t want to be here?  So if Carmelo doesn’t want to come here, doesn’t want to win, for whatever reason, money, wife, family, stupidity, then so be it.  I won’t be crying over it.  I won’t be talking crap about how management failed to attract another big FA.  I won’t be calling out DRose for not trying harder to convince him.  We play hard.  We got a good team.  You want to play with us and win some titles?  Then you’re more than welcome.  If not, your loss… see you on the court.

Plan B isn’t so bad, and is still TBD.  We’ve already made a good move on draft day to help our team.  We have a healthy DRose coming back… hopefully.  (A quick rant: Now he’s not sure if he’ll play with the US this summer, and more people will dog him.  The same people who were dogging him when he said he WAS going to play with them.  DRose can’t do anything without people getting on his case.  The only thing he needs to do is come back on the court for the Bulls and stay healthy.  That’s all I care about.)  Jimmy Buckets & Taj are a year better.  Noah is now among the NBA’s best big men.  Depending on who else we sign, we could have a pretty deep team.  Add another FA in the mix NOT named Melo, and we would still be OK.  You noticed that I haven’t mentioned Boozer…  he has to be gone one way or another, amnesty or trade, which gives the Bulls that money to sign either Melo or somebody else.  Paul Pierce would be a good addition.  An older, poor man’s Melo, with a TON of playoff experience, who can still fill it up at times.  That wouldn’t be a bad consolation prize.  Or how about bringing Deng back?  I wouldn’t mind getting the band together for one more run at it…. minus Boozer of course.

So forget about all this talk about our season hanging on Melo coming here or not.  Forget about blaming management or DRose if he doesn’t come here.  The Bulls are a great team.  They play hard.  They play for each other.  They play defense.  They play ball the right way.  Will Melo help?  No doubt.  Will we suck without him?  Don’t think so.  The ball is in your court Melo.  We know what the smart decision is… now let’s see how smart you are.

Really? Really?? REALLY??? I make 16 saves and don’t get the W!?! WOW! Let’s wait until we’re down 2 goals to press the attack offensively…a little too late boys! So the US goes home early again…angry, frustrated, and disappointed. But hey, I’m staying in Brazil for another week…can’t complain about that! Go Germany!

Hey Melo…I love the show you’re putting on with this whole free agent tour! Now all you have to do is schedule a press conference after all your meetings to tell everyone where you’re taking your talents! Do it a boys and girls club too so you can say it is for charity! And then guarantee like 7 or 8 titles! Man, I miss those times…oh wait, I’m a free agent too! YES! I can follow my own blueprint again…yay me!

I honestly think that D Rose will continue to get bashed until he plays healthy for a complete year. It just seems to be the nature of our fan base to bash him for everything from getting hurt to not coming back in the playoffs to playing for the US and everything else. I like the Paul Pierce idea.

Carmelo…we just met yesterday, but I feel like I’ve known you forever! Drose and the Bulls organization didn’t get on their knees, but I did! With you, we can get over the hump. With you, we can stop hearing all the offensive woes complaints With you, we can get you that first title that you have yet to raise other than your time at Syracuse. With you, I can sit next to LaLa and get friendly. New York doesn’t even have a mascot do they? Just another reason to come to Chicago…sweet home Chicago!
