July 20, 2021: Breaking It Up

OK, let’s break up the monotony that has recently been covering the day to day life of a Cubs fan; it hasn’t been easy lately… it’s not going to get easier any time soon… Bears season coming soon type stuff… So, for now, let’s go back, back in the day. I saw something recently on Twitter discussing how your fandom is passed down to your children. Well, let me share how I’ve worked this with my son, who is now 9 years old.

One of the earliest things I remember telling my son was in Bed Bath and Beyond; he couldn’t have been more than 2 years old. He was sitting in the seat in the shopping cart. We were walking past the team mugs, and we saw a Packers one… This is where the lessons began. I pointed to the helmet, and told him… “you know what that G stands for?” Of course he didn’t. I told him though. “Son, the G stands for Garbage”… and so it began…

He will NOT be a Packer fan; let’s just start there. He even started disliking Subway because of their green and gold colors; that’s my boy… haha. I’ve told him he can like other teams and other players. I will not buy him a jersey of any other team, but I’d get him a shirt or something. As long as the Bears are #1, we’re good. He can like other teams, just not the Packers… same goes for the Cardinals in baseball. This was a little tougher because my father in law is a Cardinals fan. I remember when he sent him a Cardinals t-shirt…. I used it to dry my car…. just kidding. Not sure if he ever wore it though… haha. It’s all good. Same goes for the Cubs; as long as they’re #1, he can like other teams… just not the Cardinals. He doesn’t like them, and even has animosity towards the Brewers and White Sox…. go figure. The Sox are the trickiest one.

I was a Sox fan growing up; I liked both them and the Cubs. Over time, this evolved into the Cubs exclusively; I don’t root… I try not to root against the White Sox. The banter back and forth between the fanbases makes it tough. In fact, now that the Cubs are sliding and the Sox are shining, it may become straight up unbearable, but it’s all good. We’re actually going to a Sox game in a couple weeks; I told him I’d get him a t-shirt if he wants… hoping he doesn’t… haha. But, hey, they are a Chicago team, right?

Of course he loves the Bulls; how could he not since I’ve been showing him Jordan highlights since he was old enough to walk. He does not like Lebron; I may have had a little influence there… haha. Most recently, we trashed the new Space Jam movie, although when we saw the previews in the movie theater, he laughed… we may watch it… that may be tough… haha. Unfortunately, one of the first memories of the Bulls linked to my son was Derrick Rose’s torn ACL. My son had just been born. We had him dressed up in a little Bulls onesie, and watched the game in our condo. He had no idea, but after D Rose went down, I almost began weeping as I was washing the dishes… haha. On the flip side, the Blackhawks memories for him were great early and often in his life. Being born in 2012, he got to experience 2 of the 3 Stanley Cups. I have a picture of him actually touching the Stanley Cup, as we followed it around the city.

OK, this was fun. Of course I could go on and on about this topic. To say my fandom is being pushed down to my son would be an understatement. Who has saved every ticket from every game we’ve been to and is planning on putting it all in a binder to give to him when he gets older? Yep, you got it. Who knows how it will stick as he gets older, but I know this old dog ain’t changing. If there is one thing you can count on, I’ll be watching my teams from here on out… and probably be writing/typing about it for as long as my fingers work. This therapy is much needed…
