July 21, 2020: Crosstown

Monday night brought game 2 of the exhibition season between the Cubs and Sox. The White Sox fresh off a win on Sunday night at Wrigley would look to clinch the exhibition title on Monday night, as the two teams headed crosstown to Sox Park for this one. The stadium was empty; cue the attendance jokes.

I was tuned in for the start of this game; I wanted to see the Cubs bat in the top of the 1st. Nothing doing. Then came the bottom of the 1st; thankfully I missed the entirety of it. After Yu gave up a couple hits, I turned it off. This is an exhibition game; there’s no need getting pissed right now. He was throwing meatballs over the plate and the Sox were crushing them. I saw later on Twitter that Eloy hit a grand salami, as the Sox exploded for 6 runs in the first inning. And that was pretty much that. The Cubs made some noise late, but the Sox took 2 out of 2 in the preseason vs the Cubs. Waiting for the real games to begin now.

What did we learn from these games? Well, you can certainly get excited about the Sox play and concerned about the Cubs; you could… Didn’t see too much panic coming from Cubs fans, but saw a whole lot of banner raising from the Sox fans. I’ve said it before… it’s been a long time since the Sox were any good; I get the excitement, especially since Sox fans have had to sit back and watch the golden era of Cubs baseball. Yes, there’s only been 1 World Series title, but multiple playoff appearances, and as Sox fans know just as well as Cubs fans, that shit just doesn’t happen. Now it’s their turn… or so I’m being told. Good luck is all I can say; don’t really mean it, but I’m saying it, so it counts anyways right? Haha…

The Sox look to have a good young team; there is plenty to be excited about… I do mean that. Whether or not the Sox will cash in on this excitement is yet to be seen, but it certainly looks like the window has been opened. The Cubs on the other hand still have a really good team. Better than the rest of the NL Central? That’s up for debate of course. The Cardinals always bring a good squad; the Reds have improved. The Brewers are still looking for the first ever World Series title; yes, you read that right. They have won 0 World Series in their franchise history in case you didn’t know. I’m just here to remind you that they haven’t won crap… like ever…. in history. Then there’s the Pirates; they were good in the 70s I guess. The Cubs should still be right in the middle of things.

Of course the Cubs and Sox will meet again when it count, with those games at the end the season too. Will there be playoff implications? Will both teams get in? Will this finally be the Cubs Sox World Series we’ve waited for our whole lives? Do we need more violence in Chicago? That would be a civil war; I guess with no fans at the games that would temper it… but I’m guessing we’d find a way to act up. All stuff that I’m happy to be talking about, except the Chicago violence part. With both teams having a decent shot this year, baseball in Chicago will be a whole lot of fun… and much needed. Play ball already!
