July 23, 2020: The Return of Baseball

Thursday night brought the return of baseball; something we have been waiting for, for a long time. Almost 4 months after it would have typically started, we finally got to see teams take the field in games that count. It felt good.

I tuned in to the first game for a while. The Yankees visited the defending champion Nationals. The Nationals are a perfect example of what could be different this year with the game. After 60 games last year, the Nationals were nowhere near the playoffs; after 162, they were in, and they ended up winning it all. The mentality definitely has to change from a marathon to a race. Stanton ended up hitting an absolute moonshot off Scherzer for the first home run of the season. That was followed up by a shot by Eaton from the Nationals off of new Yankee pitcher Gerritt Cole; that would be the only hit he would give up. Yes, it only went 6 innings before the rain came; go figure. I didn’t watch after the 1st inning; I did tune in for a quick minute to check if the game was coming back on… and there was somebody who I didn’t miss. He was broadcasting the game, and he was there in studio chatting about who he thought would win the World Series. Yes, every time A-Roid opens his mouth, it’s annoying. He gave his favorites to win it all… the 2 teams with the best odds to do it: Yankees & Dodgers. Then he was asked about his dark horse; he was asked if the Cubs could be… he said nah. Then he said, you know who I think is the dark horse, as if he were going to go deep for this one; he said the Houston Astros… they have the 3rd best odds to win it all. Way to go out on a limb Alex… can’t he do something else besides talk about baseball?

The 2nd game was Dodgers and Giants. I recently learned some things I didn’t know about the Dodgers. The stadium, with the seats on each level a different color, going from bottom to top: brown, yellow, light blue, dark blue. It was done to make it look like a beach. The awning in the bleachers; it was made to look like a wave. This was all done to welcome them to LA after they left Brooklyn; the Giants left New York to go to San Francisco the same year. I thought that was pretty cool. Being in that stadium multiple times, I never knew that. Anyways, I saw the Dodgers were heavily favored to win game 1; I thought that would be a great place to bet on the Giants. As the game was tied 1-1 later in the game, I still felt good. After waking up in the morning, seeing the final score, I guess there was a reason the Dodgers were favored by that much; 8-1 final.

OK… there it is… the start of baseball 2020. Like I said, it felt good. But Friday night? That will mark the return of Cubs baseball. That will feel better than good. Can’t wait…
