July 23, 2021: The Hype Train

posted in: Bears | 0

Ever since the Bears drafted Justin Fields, the hype train has been running full force. With most Bears fans going nuts, projecting greatness, you got everybody else telling us to calm down. Although I may not necessarily be making my Super Bowl plans at this point, I’m excited as hell too. I understand that he hasn’t played one snap in the NFL yet, but the hope he brings to a QB starved franchise playing in a QB ruled league… that’s enough to keep this thing running until…

The Bears had to take another shot at the most important position in sports. This was my biggest ask heading into the offseason. After bringing in another retread, I was not feeling it. When I saw the trade announced at the bottom of the screen on draft day, I was hyped. Who would they take? Fields or Jones? Surely, they were taking a QB. I didn’t know who would be best; I just wanted to put our chips back on the table… to get back into the game. When Fields was announced, I was extremely happy; in fact, it was the completely opposite feeling I felt when the Bears drafted Trubisky. Good luck to Mitch BTW. Although the NFL has decided he is a backup QB, maybe he’ll get another shot at a starting gig one day… maybe. No hard feelings; it wasn’t his fault the Bears traded up to get him. He does have to take ownership of his play since then, but… those days are behind us; time to move on.

Not watching a lot of college football, I didn’t know who the Bears should take. Since the draft, and everything I’ve read and heard about Justin Fields, I’m feeling like they made a pretty good pick. This guy seems dedicated to his craft; he’s not afraid to put the work in. He says all the right things too; he appears to be ready to embrace his role as leader of this football team. He gets it… he understands the situation he’s coming into. He knows that the QB bar in Chicago has been set very low; he knows we’ve been starving. He shows the confidence that makes us feel he can feed us all. Still… he hasn’t even played a preseason snap yet; that is when the train could really pickup steam… or not…

He has to be the best QB on the roster at the end of training camp and preseason. If not already, showing the coaches through the mastery of the playbook, through his play on the field, there should be no doubt who the guy taking that first snap on Week 1 should be. If not, then maybe we made a mistake. He has to be better than Dalton… If he is, then he should be starting; you start the best player at that position… no training wheels. He’s a first round draft pick coming from a big time college program; he should be ready. Yes, there are the stories of how other franchises have handled their young QBs, and how it has turned out… bravo for them. Do we think Dalton will be able to keep us above water? Would we rather wait until we’re below 500 to bring in the golden child? Like bringing in a closer in a “dirty inning”, a clean inning would be much preferred. If this kid is going to be great regardless, then it shouldn’t matter, right?

I’m trying to keep my hype in check; the Cubs help me do that. Yet, as the Cubs struggles continue, as the future of the team hangs in the balance, it feels good to have something to be excited about coming around the corner. It’s not quite time to flip that switch; I would prefer not to flip the switch for a few more months, but… if we have to go earlier than desired, having more than just a couple retreads on the roster at QB is exciting. Having another first round draft pick under center, a guy that could give us something we haven’t had in 80 years at the position, a guy that could lead us to win something that we haven’t won 35 years… if you don’t understand the hype, I don’t know what to tell you… Bear Down!
