July 26, 2020: Series Win

posted in: Cubs | 0

The Cubs topped off the first weekend of baseball being back with a series win over the Brewers; that was sweet. I know it’s only one series, but it’s the first series, it’s against the Brewers, it’s a short season, we needed a shot in the arm, etc, etc, etc. It felt damn good.

Tyler Chatwood looked damn good; I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, he did pitch well out of the bullpen last year, but starting… brings me back to the year before when he was an absolute train wreck. He was anything but that on Sunday against Milwaukee. He looked very sharp, which is a very good sign for the Cubs. The more quality arms the better, especially in a shortened season like this.

Ross had to do some more managing in this one though, since Tyler did not throw a complete game shutout. Thinking about it… the job of the NL manager has just gotten a lot easier. With pitchers not batting, the need for a pinch hitter goes down tremendously. The need for bunt vs no bunt, the need to intentionally walk the 8 hitter to get to the pitcher. The double switch… Len brought up a good point yesterday with the 3 batter minimum rule for a reliever, which I actually forgot about. There’s no need in trying to trick the other manager by putting someone on deck, then switching them after a pitching change. You know they’re facing three batters, period; plan accordingly.

After a tough game for the bullpen on Saturday, it was good to see the pen do well on Sunday. Sure, the first guy couldn’t get the ball over the plate, which I don’t get being up 3 runs, but Kyle Ryan… man, he was good. He was good last year too. I would have definitely put him in the trust circle back then, and now, he starts the year off there with a smooth 5 outs. Once the Cubs piled on some more runs, Jeffress’ job in the 9th was that much easier. Oh yeah, thanks Almora for that awesome play in center field.

There was a great play earlier in the game too, turned in by Ian Happ. With two home runs this weekend, has Ian Happ finally arrived? He looked great when we first saw him; then he struggled… spent most of last year down in Iowa, and now, he’s back… and looking to stay back. If so, not a bad number nine hitter to run out there every day. KB finally got his first hit, as did Jason Heyward. KB obviously will be in the lineup from now until forever, but Heyward… I wonder how long Rossy will stick with him if he struggles; we’ve seen this movie before.

Man it feels good to talk about the Cubs game. It feels good to have baseball back. Like I said, it’s just one small step back to normalcy. Working in the yard on Saturday, listening to Pat and Ron… all was right in the world. Hoping to talk more Cubs baseball from here on out. They head to Cincy, where the Reds have had a few guys go on the COVID list… then there’s the Marlins… ugh!
