July 29, 2014: The Great Game of Golf

I never liked golf growing.  I remember my cousins watching it on TV; I asked them why they were watching this stuff…it’s so boring.  Not until I actually started playing the game, did I begin to enjoy it.

It’s still hard to watch on TV. Yeah, I watched more than I ever did during Tiger’s run. Watching him, you sort of had the feeling like you were seeing the best of all time. My how the mighty have fallen.  Now, there’s really nothing that makes me turn that dial to one of the majors. Like most sports, I’d much rather play it.

I don’t get out often.  It’s an expensive sport, I’m not that good at it, plus it takes up most of the day, especially if you’re having a beverage while playing. What fun is golf without a brew?  I think they should allow that in the pro game.

Imagine the TV ratings soar if they made that change.  You’d see way more club tosses, you’d get some great interviews, you’d see some awesome celebrations, plus you may even have some arguments or fights among the players and caddies. Now that sounds like some must watch TV.

Another thing that they should incorporate a lot more into the sport is gambling.  There should be live betting at these events. There could be wagers on everything, like longest drive, closest to the pin, and of course, putting. How cool was it when Rory’s dad made a bunch of dough on his son’s win?

All the above rule changes are part of my annual golf outing. It’s been 14 years in a row, only missing one year, that my father, brother, and now brother in law go away for a couple days for some serious golfing.  We incorporate some additional rule changes as well.

Mulligans are welcome.  Tee shot doesn’t count it doesn’t pass the ladies’ tees. A shot doesn’t count if it goes less than 20 feet (we don’t measure). 2 shots in the water equals 1. You get 2 shots out of the sand.  That’s just the main rule changes that we abide by.  We’ve had to incorporate handicaps since my brother in law is slightly better than us… We get a stroke a hole basically.

The trips have taken us all over the Midwest, including Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, and Wisconsin. Our first trip was to Myrtle Beach; now that’s a long drive.  They’ve been a ton of good times, with countless memories, some of which will never be shared.

The best part of golfing for me is the camaraderie.  I enjoy playing the game, but it’s definitely not something I would do on my own.  It’s a bond that is shared among the men in my family, that hopefully can be continued with our sons one day.

Short blog today. Writing on my iPhone sucks. It’s time to get back out there. Up 2 strokes with 18 to play, my brother and I lead the scramble. The 2014 title is on the line.
