July 30, 2020: Opting Out

posted in: Bears | 0

Must be nice; opting out that is. To be able to say, you know what, I’m not going to work this year. Kudos for those folks who have enough money in the bank to do that; I surely don’t have that option. And it’s not for just any reason, the opting out that is. We are in the middle of a global pandemic, and there are people on every level of the spectrum when it comes to risk, panic, etc. There are reasons for these feelings, family, health conditions, general fear. Sure, if you ask me if I did X, I may die, I wouldn’t do X. However, X can be almost anything we do in this life. We can’t choose NOT to do anything; we can’t live in a bubble. We have to try to make the right decisions, the safe, smart decisions regarding all of these life choices, including the most recent, crazy ass COVID, which depending on where you live, could be going through totally different things right now. In Chicago, we’re doing pretty good, although saying that more people have been shot over the past week than have died from COVID isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Eddie Goldman is the first Bears player to opt out for the upcoming season; I wonder if we can convince him otherwise…. that’s a big loss. I’m sure there are legit reasons behind it; I’m not going to hate him for it. Like I said, I can’t make that decision for myself… not going to hate on somebody who is able to. Regardless if it’s a decision that I couldn’t make, and quite frankly, one that I didn’t make, it is a personal decision. With all the precautions that I’m sure the NFL will have in place, more than most places of employment in this country, you think you would have a level of security. Yes, most of us aren’t running around slamming into each other, the complete opposite of social distancing, so there’s that… yes, there is that. Will the NFL play their season this year?

If/when they do play, one guy will NOT be playing for the Bears anymore. Adam Shaheen is out of here; WE opted his ass out. Yes, this becomes, as if it wasn’t already, a big negative on the Ryan Pace resume; he was a bust, plain and simple. He feels like another example of a guy Pace fell in love with, and put the blinders on regarding all other options. Watch him go down to Miami and kill it… haha.

There was another player shipped out that hadn’t played a down yet for us: cornerback Tre Roberson. He was an intriguing pickup from the CFL I believe, but because of an injury I think (?), he was released. We’ll never get to see if he could have been something. Maybe he’ll go on to prove this one way or another with some other NFL team.

The NFL season has not begun yet, but plenty of news to go around, including our Bears. Much, much more to come regarding the NFL. We’ve seen players opt out in the other major sports; they’ve went on. We’ve seen an outbreak on the Marlins; they’ve went on. What is in store for America’s most popular game? Stay tuned; Bear Down!
