Fireworks: friend or foe?

I don’t know about you, but we’ve been hearing the sounds of fireworks for the past month. Growing up in the city, it’s something you get used to. With that being said, this year seemed especially bad. The booms in the hood have been ongoing for about 6 weeks strong. Maybe that’s why it didn’t seem so bad on the 4th. We passed out about midnight, and were not awaken, so that’s pretty good. The after effects of the fireworks throughout the neighborhood were visible though. Street cleaning should take care of peoples’ mess… I get it. You’re not going to clean up immediately that evening, but the next morning, get your ass up and clean up the mess in the middle of the street. Anyways…

Since these booms have been going on for so long, there are a lot of people complaining; people complain about everything by the way. I do understand it though. I too have a dog that absolutely hates the fireworks, but… it comes with the territory. Now we’re supposed to stop popping off fireworks because dogs, and more importantly, people have become so sensitive? Nah. I don’t like being woken up in the middle of the night with a loud boom, and believe me, to wake me up it has to be loud; that would be my one complaint. But other than that… summer in the city folks.

It’s funny seeing all the fireworks or gun shot debates online. Now I’m not saying that aren’t gun shots happening, and again, growing up in the city, I feel like I can differentiate between the two pretty well, but some people… “I just heard 5 loud booms; were those gun shots?” It’s bad, but it ain’t that bad. Now I don’t live in the heart of the South or West sides where it really is that bad, but other than that, the majority definitely fall into the fireworks category. There was the one night where we were sitting in front when we definitely did hear gun shots… Unfortunately, I’m used to some of that as well…

I think you could have predicted that this summer would be especially bad. I mean, it’s bad EVERY summer OK; let’s just start there. We only get a few months of nice weather, so once that hits, people start wilding out; that’s been going on my entire life. Yet like the fireworks, it seems especially bad this year. Again, could have predicted that since everyone has been cooped up for months, coupled with the unemployment rate, coupled with all the racial tensions, coupled with the anti-cop vibe, and that’s on top of the normal street, gang, drug, money shit that goes on in these hoods year round. Mix it altogether and what do you have? A pretty violent summer, that will be going strong for another month easy.

When will it all end? Well, I’m sure we’ll be hearing leftover fireworks for another couple days at least; it may even extend through next weekend. As far as the violence; that’s a whole ‘nother story. An easy answer does not exist. It’s horrible for the innocent victims, especially the kids; I hate to see anything bad happen to kids period. And although it seems worse now more than ever, it ebbs and flows… it has been doing that forever. It doesn’t make it OK, but those are the facts. Here’s to one day only complaining about fireworks, and not debating if they’re gun shots or not… until then, stay safe out there.
