July 5, 2020: Outdoor Activities

With the COVID still going strong throughout the country, in some places more than others, when I’m thinking about stuff to do, I’m thinking about outdoor activities. We’ve been executing on a few of those.

First of all, I’m trying to spend as much time as possible outside in our backyard. I got the normal outdoor stuff to do, like cutting grass, pulling weeds, and breaking out the sawzall to hack down some overgrown weeds/plants/trees. But I’m trying to maximize it. Firing up the grill multiple times a week; heck, even having our daily bowl of cereal outside on our deck has been fun. Playing catch, kicking the ball around, throwing the frisbee… like I said, anything and everything to get outside.

My son finally learned to ride his bike. I know, kind of late, but he really has never been that interested. I knew when he was ready to learn, he would pick it up quick; that’s exactly how it happened. He wanted to download this video game, kind of like a Fortnite game, and I told him not until you learn to ride your bike. What happened later that week when I was at work? My wife sent me a video of him riding his bike. Funny… just a little motivation to get the job done. Since then, we’ve taken him bike riding a few times. My wife has a bike, but I need to get one, especially now since he knows how to ride his. Been looking around a bit for a deal, but probably should just break down and spend the bucks already. Actually got together for the first time this summer with a classmate of his; that was fun.

Sunday lead us to another new adventure: hiking! OK, well it really wasn’t hiking; there was a main trail that we walked through the forest out southwest of Chicago. And although it was a burner out, it was still fun; at least half the time we were in the shade. Overall a little more than 5 miles walked; my son pointed out that this was his longest walk ever… no arguing that point. I told him now we could walk to the lakefront, which is about 5 miles from our house. Not sure how soon we’ll be doing that… maybe bike it, once I get mine.

There’s plenty to do outside, at least in the summer in Chicago. Once the fall and winter rolls around, that will become a bit more difficult, although there are still plenty of things to do. Anything to get out of the house; anything that involves a little physical activity is welcome… that never hurts. Maybe a quick road trip to do some more outdoor type activities? I finally broke down and took a week off from work. Will we be able to swing it?

Sure, I think so. Overall, Illinois is doing pretty well with the COVID; the curve has definitely been flattened. Don’t see any trips to Florida or Texas anytime soon, but a quick road trip? I think we can make that happen. Plenty of outdoor stuff to get into… did someone say camping?
