July 6, 2020: Zero to Sixty

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 0

60 games, 9 teams, just over 2 months… welcome to MLB baseball 2020. Long gone are the days of 162 game seasons. Forget about the marathon, the up & down roller coaster of a season; this is zero to sixty baby. Who can do it the best?

Everything changes when you’re talking 60 vs 162 games, and at the same time, nothing changes. Although we’ll only see the Brewers, Cardinals, Pirates, Reds, White Sox, Indians, Tigers, Royals, and Twins, we’ll still need to pitch the ball, hit the ball, catch the ball, and run the bases. With that being said, all it takes is one good run of baseball, one good month, and you can put yourself in great position. You don’t need to be good over an extended amount of time; you need to go on a hot streak day 1, and you’ll be good. Hey, for the Cubs and all the cold weather teams, you don’t have to contend with the cold for a couple months at the start of the season. You’re coming in hot; that should bode well, no?

The fact that there will be no crowds sucks, especially for the Cubs… you know, because we actually fill it up on a regular basis. Sox fans always get sensitive about attendance jokes; truth hurts I guess. They’re not alone though. Just think of the Marlins or the Rays; no crowds, no problem. So what happens to that home field advantage of the Wrigley faithful filling the cathedral? Well, they’re still playing in the cathedral, the rooftops may be going on, you know people are going to be gathering around Wrigley during the games; it will be interesting to see this play out. Maybe there will be crowds at some point? Well, let’s just get to the start of the season.

You hear about more and more guys that get the COVID; you hear about more players who are opting out. We’ve talked about this already. At this point, I’m just glad it’s none of the Cubs players; we can only hope for continued health and safety for the guys. You hear about the testing issues MLB is having… welcome to the club right? There are many states dealing with that. Although, you know, if we stopped testing, there would be no more cases; that would solve everything… haha.

Back to the schedule… Brewers, Reds, Pirates, and Royals to start off the season. I know the Reds are supposed to be better, and if we’re agreeing that they are the best team out of this bunch, then I’m feeling pretty good. Who will be the best team we face during the regular season? Cardinals, Twins? Are the White Sox in that conversation? If you listen to the hype train, they are. Will a shortened season help speed up that hype train? I think the shortened season could help any team; it could help any flawed team. The flaws can be covered up in the short term; in 162, sure, there will always be flawed teams, but a lot of that gets shaken out over time. No shaking out… get hot, get in, and you could be the 2020 World Series champ. Those battle hardened teams that may take a minute to get into their groove, could be in trouble… do the Cubs fall into that category? On the flip side, you don’t have to save yourself for 162; go balls out from the get go. It will be different.

Whatever I say; selfishly, I’m just ready for live sports to begin. I’ve missed Cubs baseball most of all. To see them on the field, any field, fans or not, will be a welcome sight. Play ball!
