June 1, 2020: The Last Starter

posted in: Bulls | 0

OK, moving onto small forward. This is the last starter we need and our starting five will be complete; we’ll then move on to the bench. This one feels like a slam dunk too.

This guy has won championships. This guy is a great shooter and passer. Some folks consider him one of the best of all time. You know him, you love him. His first name starts with an L. Yep, the starting small forward on my all-time NBA team is… Larry Bird. What? You thought I was going to say Lebron James? Ha!

Let me just kill the suspense: LeBron James will NOT be on this team. Is he one of the greatest 15 players that ever played? I’m not saying that he’s not. My team will NOT be comprised of the best 15 players of all time. I need to fill out my team by position, by need, with guys I think would fit well. It’s not going to be just the best players ever… even that is up for grabs though. Although I think it would be pretty safe to say LeBron would be in that top 15 group, he will not be on this roster. There, done.

Larry Legend is no slouch, of course. In filling out my starting lineup, I’m getting a heart of a champion, a literal multiple champion, who can do pretty much everything. We have our first real three point threat in the lineup, something I will address when I’m filling the bench. We have a guy that can rebound, play defense, and help move the ball around, ensuring that this premium talent will always get the best available shot, and if not, we have multiple guys who can make the difficult shot, including Bird. That being said, there are other choices at this position…

If I was completely biased, I would have slammed Scottie Pippen in there; see, I told you I wasn’t! Will he make the roster? There is good potential in that, but for starters, I’m going Bird. What about Dr J? Again, kind of like Charles Barkley, he’s one of my favorite all time players. Doesn’t mean he’s starting on this team; maybe he makes the roster? If I thought the starting lineup was hard, it’s going to be even tougher filling out the 15 man roster. Dominique, Pierce, Worthy… all worthy thoughts. Going back to guys I didn’t see play, like Baylor, Barry, and Havlicek just to name a few… Again, ton of choices out there, but I feel pretty damn good about my starting lineup.

Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Kevin Garnett, and Hakeem Olajuwon would be able to hold their own against any other 5 in history. Would they go undefeated? Well, you need some depth on your roster for that, no? Yes, and that will be coming next. Let’s see how good this team will really be. Let’s pick some bench guys that would make other guys’ all-time starting lineups. Players 6-15 coming next.
