June 10, 2020: Hometown Pick

Did you know the baseball draft was coming up? Honestly, I haven’t really been reading up on anything lately, besides the sports stuff that comes across my Twitter feed. With the absence of live sports, definitely feeling a bit out of the loop. Yet, what happened in the first round of the MLB draft got me very excited.

I found out about the draft the day of; I started reading some stuff here and there. No clue who the Cubs were going to pick; no clue who they were zoning in on. I did see some stuff about this Chicago kid that folks were hoping ended up on the White Sox; his name was Ed Howard. He went to Mount Caramel; Catholic League represent! He played SS, played for the Jackie Robinson Chicago team in the Little League World Series, and went to the Sox baseball camp. It would have been a pretty cool story had the Sox drafted him; they didn’t draft him though…

Then it was the Cubs turn to pick, and lo and behold, the Cubs select Ed Howard. Wow! As I started reading more about the kid, the fact that he is from here and will hopefully one day be playing for the Cubs, my excitement level grew. Who cares that we already have Baez at SS. Love Baez, hope he retires a Cub, but that doesn’t mean he’ll stay at SS; it doesn’t mean Ed Howard will have to play SS on the Cubs either. If this kid is that talented, and is that good on the field, we’ll find a place for him. Of course, like with every draft pick, only time will tell; most people are feeling pretty good about this pick.

It’s kind of cool that we burst the Sox bubble with this pick too. I’m sure everybody is excited about Mr. Crotch or whatever his name is that the Sox drafted, but can you imagine… hometown kid from the south side of Chicago was passed on by the Sox, drafted by the Cubs, and came back to haunt the Sox by being an all star player. Love it! All these Sox fans yakking about Eloy this, Eloy that… we suckered the Cubs… yada yada… last time I checked, neither team has won anything since that deal. Maybe this year? Hopefully we get a chance.

Still, to possibly be able to stick it to the Sox is fun to think about. I miss that. I miss the Cubs Sox banter, which would have been elevated this year, since the Sox were supposed to be better. But noooo…. F-ing corona… soon enough we will be back to baseball, back to talking crap; this was a good appetizer.

Welcome to the Cubs Ed! Congrats on being drafted in the first round. Hope to see you play in Wrigley soon. Hope to see anybody play in Wrigley soon. Go Cubs!
