After selecting Ed Howard with their first pick of the draft, the Cubs went on to select four other kids in rounds 2-5. Let’s take a quick peek.

2nd round: LHP Burl Carraway

3rd round: OF Jordan Nwogu

4th round: LHP Luke Little

5th round: RHP Koen Moreno

As I was looking at the picks, I noticed the birthdays, not the days themselves, but the years. All of these picks were born in 1999-2001. Good God I’m old. Of course these new Chicago athletes never saw the Bears won a Super Bowl, but they weren’t even alive for the Bulls dynasty!!! Soon enough, there will be no more draft picks born in the 90s; let that sink in for a minute. I guess the world does move pretty fast around here; ah, to be young again…

High level thoughts include being happy that the Cubs selected some pitching; still waiting for some home grown pitching prospects. There was Adbert Alzolay that made his debut last year; we were actually at that game in Wrigley. Taking a quick glance at the Cubs top pitching prospects, I see a few more guys in the top 10 in their system. Only AA is expected to be with the major league club at some point this year, if/when we have a year. Another one is targeted for 2021, while the other two are targeted for 2022. What will be the target for these newly minted picks?

In general, it takes time to reach the big leagues in baseball. Although the 2019 draft class has not been heard from yet, we do have Nico Hoerner from 2018 who made some noise last year; looking for more great things from him this year. As I tried to look up the recent draft history of the Cubs, the only thing I was finding was the first rounders. 2017 Brendon Little nada, no first round pick in 2016, and Happ in 2015, who has shown flashes. Of course Schwarber and Bryant back to back in 2014 & 2013 worked out pretty well; Schwarber made his way to the bigs really quick. Other than 2011 & 2012 when we had Baez and Almora, you have to go back to 2001 and Mark Prior to find someone the Cubs drafted in the first round that made any noise for the Cubs; there was Josh Donaldson in 2007… Kerry Wood was in 1995, Shawon Dunston in 1982, and…. that’s about it, if I’m reading correctly. And you wonder why the Cubs hadn’t won a damn thing in so long…

What does this mean for the current draft class? Nothing, hopefully. The track record has been a lot better recently; hopefully Ed Howard will be a household name with the Cubs one day. As for the other 4 picks selected on day 2 of the draft, good luck. As for me, I need to do some more research on the history of the Cubs draft picks, and the MLB for that matter. Go Cubs!
