June 12, 2014: The Other Football

posted in: Bears, Cubs, White Sox | 6

Yesterday was a mixed bag for baseball, with the Cubs losing in Pittsburgh 4-2, and the Sox beating Detroit 8-2.  The Sox actually moved within 2.5 games of 1st place, as Abreu took Verlander deep twice.  What happened to Verlander, and at what point are they going to make Abreu take a drug test?  This kid continues to rake, as his latest victim is a pitcher that appears past his prime.  I could go into more detail there, but I typically don’t watch the Sox games.  So, instead I’m going to change gears a little bit, and talk about something I will be watching: The World Cup.

Why watch the World Cup?  Why watch soccer period?  Well, for the better part of 4 years, I would agree with you.  This is the one time that I actually get interested in soccer.  I enjoy watching teams compete at the world’s highest level; it’s kind of like the Olympics.  Who doesn’t like watching the Olympics?  OK, there are probably many people that do not watch, but I love the Olympics.  You take the best athletes from all over the world, and watch them go at it.  Just like in the World Cup, you have the best athletes in the world’s number one sport competing for that trophy.

It is the number one sport in the world, pretty much everywhere else but here.  This explains why the US team is never that good.  As a father in this country, I don’t sit here and think “I hope my son plays soccer”, although with his wicked left kicks in the games in our hallway, I might have to go with the flow.  Soccer takes a back seat to football, baseball, basketball, and hockey in this country.  So, while the best athletes are represented in the rest of the world’s teams, you will not find America’s best athletes on that field.  You will find them playing one of the other sports that I mentioned.  So, the US is never considered a contender in this World Cup, and that’s fine.  I wonder how the rest of the world would fare in OUR version…

The real football in this country is the NFL.  How this sport has taken over our country…  It’s gotten so big, that almost everybody is watching now.  Of course, DA Bears are our team, but between all the national games now, the confidence pools, the squares, and of course, fantasy football, there is a reason to pay attention to EVERY game.  Since they only play once a week, you have time to do your research, prepare all your picks, and work yourself into a frenzy for each and every game.  We can’t get enough football. In fact if I wanted to, I could talk about football every day in this blog, and will be more and more as we get closer to the season.  Our football is king of all sports in this country.  Soccer isn’t even close.

How many of us played soccer growing up?  Well, I did.  Soccer was actually part of what we called Group Teams at the Boys Club, where we played a variety of sports, gaining points for each as we fought our way to the top of the standings.  That was not my best sport, and living in a mostly Mexican neighborhood, the only thing I had going for my game was that I could kick the ball hard.  However, most kids nowadays DO play soccer.  It is gaining popularity in our country little by little.  I mean, it’s the easiest, least expensive sport to play.  Besides getting uniforms, the only other thing you need is a soccer ball.  You don’t need a helmet or a glove or skates… the only other sport that is as easy to play is basketball.  Maybe that’s why the popularity across the world.  Although soccer is number one, basketball is definitely second.  With the money issues that everyone faces, will soccer start to rise in popularity even more?  What about the concussion issues in the NFL?  Will that start to impact the popularity?

Well, as I started high school, my mother didn’t want me to play football, and that was almost 25 years ago.  Nowadays, I have already been given the word by my wife that my son is not allowed to play… I can’t blame her or my mother.  The NFL is the most dangerous sport, and there are probably many parents with the same opinion.  Will that lead to the eventual decline of the NFL?  We can go into more detail about this another day.

For the time being, there is NOTHING better than the NFL, so that makes the Bears king in this city.  While I will enjoy watching the other football for the next few weeks, there is nothing like our football.  There is nothing like Sunday 12pm games.  That’s part of what Sundays are all about:  Church, the Beatles, and DA Bears.  The countdown to the season begins…

The World Cup is just like the Olympics. It only happens every 4 years, and it has countries battling each other for a single medal. I have played a little soccer in my days, and I have been called the white pele (self proclaimed)! It is not difficult to kick a ball hard, but there is so much more than that, just like the other major sports. Practice, practice, practice! Huh? We talkin about practice? Practice? HAHAHA. While I am not a soccer fan, I do enjoy watching the World Cup and will be this year. I will be rooting for the US, but there is little chance of this coming to fruition. So my money would be on the motherland of Germany. I think they will get it done against Brazil in the semis and take down Argentina to win the World Cup. You heard it here first. olay, olay, olay, olay…Olay…OLAY!

Not a bad pick with Germany. Brazil is the heavy favorite, especially playing in their home country. However, my pick is Argentina. With the best player in the world on their team, I’m rolling with them.

Verlander 7 earned runs, Happy belated Kate! Your boyfriend is losing it. Sox win, cubs lose, of course this segment is short. No AA report for the cubs?

It is World Cup Time! There’s more floppers and actors in soccer than the NBA and Hollywood. Watch it if you must, but that sport needs some serious tweaking and the politics involved is an absolute joke. The international players are good, but the USA doesn’t even qualify half the time cause our best athletes are playing something else. Can we fast forward to the parts were the players are actually running fast and making an athletic movement in an attempt to score a goal? Too much wasted time setting up mediocre plays in the midfield area. Go Poland! Go Ireland! Go USA! Are they in it?

Cubs vs Sox game? I’m watching the Cubs every time. I can rehash what’s in the SunTimes or ESPNChicago, but that wouldn’t be right. If you or anybody else is interested in writing a Sox segment going into more detail on how the 2nd most popular baseball team in the city is doing, let me know.

FYI. Poland and Ireland are NOT in it. All the eggs go in the USA basket this time around.

I watch a ton of soccer. I love when guys flop and throw themselves down for no reason. Oh wait, is that where I get it from?

yeah, i’ll be watching a lot of soccer too!!! but only if it makes the ‘top 10’ or the ‘not top 10’ on sportscenter. and your neighborhood growing up was ‘hispanic’, not mexican! and pele, it’s ‘ole’ like ole, not ‘olay’ like the face cream! and right now, i’m enjoying game 4 of the nba finals because the spurs are up like 24 over the miami crybabies, or is it the miami floppers!!!???
