June 18, 2014: On the Radio

So last night, I actually DID something sports related instead of just writing about it.  Since I was on the road going to and from my destination, I took the opportunity to listen to some Cubs baseball on the radio.  Depending on the mood I’m in, I don’t always listen to sports radio when I’m in the car, but I always listen to the Cubs if the game is on while I’m in the car.  I like listening to the game on the radio.

I’m not so sure that feeling is shared by many nowadays.  Back in the day, that’s all there was… the radio.  I’m sure many of the older generation still listen to the radio, but how many of the younger generation do?  This younger generation is the same ones saying that baseball is boring, so they most likely do NOT listen to it on the radio, if they can’t even enjoy it live in person or on TV.  Let me tell you what is boring: soccer.  I guess it’s all a matter of opinion, but growing up playing baseball, and watching baseball pretty regularly, I enjoy the game in any form.

Nothing beats going to the game, and no I don’t mean on the rooftops.  The rooftops are fun, but it doesn’t compare to being IN the park.  Being at the game, relaxing, watching every pitch, taking score (which I do sometimes), is the best experience.  It is a slow moving game sometimes, but that’s OK.  There are so many things to watch ON the field.  I guess that’s part of why I love Wrigley the best.  There’s minimal distractions.

In today’s world, with all the “distractions”, it’s easy to be ADD.  There are times I could be watching TV, looking at my fantasy team on my iPad, while I’m eating a bowl of cereal & “listening” to my wife.  It’s like we need those distractions.  We need that scoreboard telling us when to cheer, we need 20 other things going on in the ballpark to keep everyone interested.  I don’t, but it does seem like it’s harder and harder just to sit back, relax, and concentrate on one thing.  That’s why I enjoy going to a game.

Watching the game on TV can be better sometimes.  What makes watching a game on TV better, is that you can be surrounded by family & friends.  You don’t need everybody to buy a ticket to the game, and find so many seats together.  You simply have a decent sized TV, and invite people over.  Now, this doesn’t happen much for regular season baseball games.  It’s not like that Sunday tradition of Bears football.  It happens more when the postseason begins, and for the Cubs, those times are few and far between.  But being in the comfort of your own home, on your own couch, with the refrigerator a few feet away, and no lines at the bathroom, it’s enjoyable as well.

I like the radio too.  Just imagine when that’s all there was…. no TV, no internet, no cell phones, just radio.  How would any of us survive?  Listening to the game on the radio takes you back to a simpler time, and I like that.  When it was Pat Hughes and Ron Santo on the radio, it didn’t get any better.  While Ron is up there trying to help us get that title, Pat remains in the booth.  He is an awesome broadcaster.  Nothing against the TV guys, but it doesn’t get much better than listening to Pat on the radio.  I’m glad he’s part of the new Cubs radio deal, as they leave WGN to become part of WBBM.  That had to be part of the deal.  I would have been upset if it wasn’t.  He should be broadcasting Cubs games until he can’t any more.

Having to take a ride today at lunch time means more Cubs on the radio.  I don’t mind.  One more thing of note on this 18th of June, besides recognizing the Sox for their victory over the Giants, and mentioning that the Cubs lost to the Marlins, is a birthday shout out.  My godson James turns 3 years old today.  It was great seeing his cousin, my 2 year old, tell him happy birthday over the phone this morning, while James was busy trying to tell us about the bike he just got.  I don’t think it gets any better than being at that age.  It’s a simpler time, when all you have to worry about is what to play with next.  I like that.

Are you really watching the game when you are at Wrigley or are you just watching the half naked bimbos through your sunglasses? Just curious.
