June 24, 2014: Not Enough

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

As we head towards the midway point of the baseball season, the Cubs and Sox are playing like everybody thought they would:  horrible.  They both sit in the bottom of their divisions, which equates to a combined 19 games below .500 and 21.5 games out of 1st place.  This is getting brutal.

With Chris Sale on the mound Monday night, the Sox looked to end their 4-game skid.  Not having his best stuff, he still pitched good enough to win.  Giving up only 2 runs in 6 innings, both in the 1st inning, Sale was in line for the win.  That’s because Jose Abreu hit another HR and drove in 3 runs, as the Sox led 4-2 when Sale left.  The Sox dynamic duo did their jobs; it just wasn’t enough tonight.  With Sale already at 107 pitches, Ventura had to trust the bullpen to get 9 outs, and hold the 2-run lead.  They got through the 7th, but gave up 1 run in the 8th.  As they headed to the 9th, the Sox closer Belisario trotted out.  I’m not sure why he is their closer.  As I watched him give up a solid lead off single and plunk Adam Jones in the back, I knew this would not turn out well.  Next up, Nelson Cruz, who he struck out.  OK, there is hope.  As Chris Davis marched to the plate as a pinch hitter, after being benched to start the evening, you had to have a bad feeling.  He went deep, and the Sox lost 6-4.

My 5-6 road trip prediction for the Sox is looking pretty optimistic at this point.  With a 0-5 start, and now 7 games under, they’d have to win 5 of the next 6 games to make me look good.  Sale and Abreu were not enough tonight.  Sure to be all stars, they give you what you expect night in night out.  They have to rate as one of the best 1-2 punches in the league, but they cannot save this team.  We knew it was going to be an up and down season; this is the down part.  Hold on, it will get better…… or will it?

As the Cubs took on the Reds Monday night, they sent their ace Samardzija to the mound.  Giving up a 1st inning run as well, he shut the Reds down for his remaining 5 innings.  Also at 107 pitches, he was taken out after 6, trailing 1-0.  Zero runs again.  Well, the Cubs did have their chances.  In the bottom of the 4th, Rizzo led off with a single, and Castro followed with a double.  2nd and 3rd with nobody out.  The problem: the Cubs dynamic duo were standing on the bases.  That meant that there was nobody left in this lineup to get a big hit.  Cubs failed to score.  They finally broke through in the bottom of the 6th, when who else, Rizzo hit a HR to left center.  So with the score 1-1 we headed to the 9th, where Rondon imploded, giving up 5 runs, as the Cubs lost 6-1.

My 6-4 home stand prediction for the Cubs is looking pretty optimistic at this point.  With at 1-3 start, and now 12 games under, they’d have to win 5 of the next 6 games to make me look good.  Samardzija, Rizzo, and Castro were not enough tonight.  With at least one of them sure to be an all star, they give you what you expect night in night out, but they cannot save this team.  We knew it was going to be an up and down season; this is the down part.  Hold on, it will get better…..or will it?

Just another 2 loss night for Chicago’s baseball teams, who are showing you why most predicted a last place finish for both.  This is depressing.  I thought we would be able to make it through the summer.  I’m ready for the “up part” in this rollercoaster ride.  The truth is, both teams don’t have enough to win.  With all the talk of the Cubs unloading again, what will the Sox do?  Will they unload pieces of their roster, like Ramirez and…  I’m not sure who else the Sox could even trade.  These teams are bad, this much is true.  As we settle in for this summer ride, we wait for the winning streak… we wait… at least until Bears season.

Both teams need to put on their ‘Big Boy’ pants and go out and win a freakin game. This is starting to suck.
