June 28, 2020: Coming Back

Well, it’s slowly taking shape; sports will be coming back. This will be a welcome sight, whenever it actually happens. Of course, now the COVID cases are back on the upswing across the country… well, actually only a few states are helping to “unflatten” the curve. Now only if these states would have listened the first time around… Yeah, those bastards may delay this comeback even further; this may even cause impact to football. Just as numbers in many states across the country were looking good… bam! Now, panic is back; assholes. So will sports be coming back when they say it is? Time will tell; patiently waiting. Today isn’t about sports though. It’s about the comeback of something else: church. Sunday was the first day we were able to return to Sunday mass in three and a half months. I needed that.

Actually, it was sad. Everybody in their masks, spread out across the church, sanitizer sprayed on our hands multiple times, no sharing peace with everybody, communion at our seats, no singing. Still, just to be there was enough for me; to receive communion for the first time in 10 weeks made my day. 10 weeks without going to mass is a long time for me; it wasn’t always like that. Growing up it most definitely was: Catholic grammar school, Catholic high school, Catholic university. But even after all that, as I finished college and rolled into my 20s, church was put on the back burner. There were plenty of times where I went months without going. I turned into a “Chreaster”… you know, only going to church on Christmas and Easter. It actually took moving across the country for me to get back into going to church; I don’t think I’ll ever swing back the other way that far again.

Of course, we don’t go EVERY week… most of the time though. Being able to go again, after a reservation of course, was great; even though I felt sadness, I’m not complaining. Heck, attendance in the church on a normal weekend in the summer is low anyways; how many people are actually “missing it”? My hands have had more sanitizer in the last few months than I’ve had my entire life; just wait for the side effects of too much sanitizer! I certainly like to shake folks’ hands in church, but I guess nodding & flashing the peace sign will have to work for now. Communion at our seats actually saves me the walk; hey, I need those steps! And singing… well, yes, I actually do sing, but not that loud; I yell a lot louder watching my teams play. Overall, these are small sacrifices to be made to be able to get back in the door.

The priest’s homily was short and sweet, not going into all that has went on, and hasn’t went on the past 10 weeks. It was what he said at the end that kind of got me. He asked those that were there to allow for other folks to make a reservation before coming back again. To wait until later in the week to see if there are still spots available before returning. Not sure why that got me, but it did. Just another sacrifice to be made in this 2020 year. But this is what we do right? THIS is what it’s about, no? Sacrifice. It’s not that much to ask; it’s not like we’re being asked to sacrifice our lives…
