June 30, 2020: Two Years

Two years ago was the last time I played golf until this last day of June 2020. The first half of 2020 is officially over; the second half cannot be worse, right? Ending the first six months of the year on the golf course felt right…

It was kind of a running joke. My brother and I had purchased this Group On nine years ago for this golf course. Every year we said, let’s go golf there; every year, we didn’t. Golfing becomes more difficult with a young family, at least until they’re old enough to get out there with you. Depending on where you play, with travel to and from, you’re talking about a half a day minimum. It’s been those same 2 years since we’ve been away on a golf trip. With baseball seasons in full swing for the kids of the attendees, and considering getting away for a half a day is challenging, how about 3 days/2 nights? Yeah, well any idea of a golf trip return in 2020 was zapped thanks to COVID, but we had to get out… and finally, we did. I can’t believe they didn’t honor the promotional value.

One of my favorite things to do on the golf course is looking for my balls. This works out pretty well since most of my balls do not land in the fairway. It’s peaceful… It feels a bit like Gladiator, in his dream sequences, where he’s walking, feeling the thistle/tall grass against his hands. Yeah, I’ll Maximus my ass into the rough looking for another one of my sheep that have went astray. Most of the time, I’ll come out of there with multiple balls; sometimes one of them will be mine. It doesn’t really matter… I just enjoy wandering aimlessly, not thinking about a damn thing, giving those gears a break. As long as we’re not being pushed, I’ll spend a handful of minutes in there, trying to avoid poison ivy, as if I know what that looks like, and trying not to fall down a hill or step into the marsh. Breathe in that fresh air, feel the hot sun shine down, experience that bit of nature in this brief break from the concrete jungle… this is what I needed, for starters. This brief unplug does wonders.

Yeah, we all need to “get away” sometimes. Although reality may not bite, you still need to take a step out of the daily routine; in a year like 2020, where everyone’s routine has taken a hit aka been thrown upside down, taking a step away from it all is a must. Now that I’ve had my step, it’s time to take a walk.

Always a good day. Like they say: “A bad day on the golf course is still better than a good day at work”!

And a good time was had by all. Need to plan another one. Thought the 1st week in August was slated as a trip to Hickory!
