June 5, 2020: Common Knowledge

We’re still on that game show kick. My son is getting into the shows on the Food Network too; triple D, triple G, anything with Guy Fieri is good to go. But GSN is still holding strong. One of the games is hosted by Joey Fatone; it’s called Common Knowledge. He asks questions that most should know I guess; we don’t do too bad. It’s not a bad trivia show; not a huge fan of Fatone, but it’s fine.

In today’s world, it seems like that common knowledge is lacking. I don’t know if it’s quite “knowledge”, maybe common sense? common courtesy? Whatever you want to call it, it’s not as common as we’d think. I still remember what I was taught growing up. You treat everybody fairly. You give everybody the benefit of the doubt. You don’t treat somebody a certain way just because somebody else that looks like them, or somebody else that has the same job as them, or somebody else that has anything in common with them, may have done something bad to you. I think that’s a good place to start.

By that I mean as parents. We can all play a part in making things better; I know that’s my number one goal. I’m not going to teach my son to dislike somebody just because of how they look. I’ve told him there are bad people of every kind; I also told him there are good people of every kind. He will be able to tell who is who as he goes on through life, but he will NOT have any preconceived notions. Of course I will want to share my experience with him, to help him make smart decisions, but the truth is, like I said above, there are good and bad of every kind of people.

The sad thing is that the bad people of a certain type ruin it for the good people. I’d like to think that the bad people are certainly in the minority; I’d like to think that most people are good at heart… maybe I’m naive. I know that the bad people get a lot more press than the good. That’s normal though. We all know that bad news travels a lot faster than good news; people remember the bad a lot more than they remember the good. Is that somehow built into us?

Something else that is a must on the teaching menu is to try to understand where other people are coming from. Nobody can possibly understand exactly how someone else is feeling. Nobody has experienced the things that person has experienced in their lives that have shaped their opinions. You may call it empathy. Another thing is that we do not live in a black and white world. I mean, it’s not this way or that way… the truth is, we live in a very gray world. There are some things that are clear cut; there are others, a lot of other things that are not, and just because we don’t agree with someone doesn’t mean we have to hate them… We should all be understanding of each others’ opinions… most of them at least.

I don’t know. We should all try our best; raising our kids to be good people is key to helping make the world a better place now and in the future. Being nicer people in general would be pretty helpful too; how about we start that when we’re behind the wheel? That’s just one place, and this is just one person’s opinion. Being nicer any time we interact with others would be cool. Although I think this common courtesy should be common sense, it’s not. Although I think all folks should be treated equally, they’re not. Let’s be better, you know, all you need is love type shit. Well, easier said than done… but there’s no better time to start than today. Good luck to us all.
