March 1, 2020: Touch of Home

You go on vacation to get away… to forget about home for a while… to break the routine. Going away for work is not quite the same. First off, you have to work all day, most times longer hours than you normally work. It is a chance to break the routine, which is probably the best part, however, you miss home; your loved ones are not with you, and although that’s great for a quick casino night, if you’re talking multiple days without them, especially a young child, it sucks; thank God for FaceTime. I was able to find something that cheered me up.

As I settled into my hotel room on Sunday night, I flipped through the channels; nice selection of available channels let me tell you. The guide said “Nationals classics” which makes sense considering I was sitting in Baltimore; I guess it would make more sense if it were “Orioles classics”. Anyways, in the information I saw Nationals vs Cubs… from 2005! At first I thought it said 2015; I started thinking what game this could be. Then I confirmed it actually was 2005; now I had absolutely no clue what game this could be. I seem to remember Zimmerman hitting a game winning home run against us, although maybe I’m thinking of that first Nationals game on ESPN. What the heck could this game be about?

It didn’t matter. As I crawled under the covers, I really enjoyed watching Cubs baseball again. First off, it was a day game at Wrigley. Secondly, even though it was “Nationals classics” it was Len and Bob on the call. I’ve grown to really like Len over the years; I was never a big fan of Bob Brenly. The Cubs lineup went something like this: Jerry Hairston Jr, Neifi Perez, Derek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Todd Walker… crazy. The best part was the guy on the mound though; Big Z! I loved Zambrano. The passion he brought every game, his prowess at the plate; I loved it. Yes, there were times when his emotions worked against him, like if they got a cheap hit off him to give up a run, or even worse, if one of his defenders made an error behind him. On this day, the Nationals led by Jose Guillen scored a couple runs; it was 2-0 Nationals as the game headed into the latter third. I fell asleep then.

I slept good after watching that touch of home. Obviously the Cubs would lose that game; it wouldn’t be a Nationals classic if they didn’t. It didn’t matter. It reminded me of Chicago, the Cubs, and day baseball at Wrigley; three of my favorite things. I can’t wait for baseball to return; I can’t wait to be back home. Go Cubs!
