The Blackhawks were back; that was already official. After some really dark days for the franchise, the Hawks were back in a big way… and this time, EVERYBODY got to see them. Running through the Western Conference on the way to their first Stanley Cup appearance in 18 years, the Blackhawks bandwagon was overflowing. Everybody was a hockey fan; all Chicagoans were hungry for a championship. Would the Blackhawks be able to close the deal?

18 years ago was the last Stanley Cup game the Blackhawks played. It was the Chicago Stadium back then; the Blackhawks were on the wrong end of a sweep vs the Penguins. The Penguins were busy repeating, while the reigning NBA Champions were doing the same. Besides the fact that the Blackhawks weren’t on TV, the Bulls had some guy named Jordan playing for them, and were just at the beginning of their dynasty. Sure, the Blackhawks were a good team, but they weren’t the Bulls. Did you know at that time in 1992, the Blackhawks had made the playoffs 23 straight years? I didn’t. They would make the playoffs 5 more years after that, a grand total of 28 years in a row, before the dark days arrived. That is one damn impressive run. Unfortunately, there were 0 Stanley Cup championships in that run.

49 years ago was the last Stanley Cup championship. From 1959 to 1968, the Blackhawks made the playoffs 10 consecutive years. This time they cashed in on one of those appearances. It was their 3rd Stanley Cup winner at the time. The Hawks were lead by Pierre Pilote, Bobby Hull, and Stan Mikita; Glenn Hall was in goal. You may have heard of them; you may have seen Hull & Mikita outside the UC… as their statues greet all incoming fans. One of the Original Six franchises, the Blackhawks were a proud franchise; the pride was back.

The team had been built; Dale Tallon was mostly responsible… Stan Bowman would enjoy his work. Savard was the right coach as this young team figured things out; Coach Q came in when they were ready to take it to the next level. They got valuable experience in 2009 while paying some dues. They recorded a franchise best 112 points during the 2009-2010 regular season. They passed THE test against the Predators, made the Canuck fans hate us some more, and swept the Western Conference leader Sharks. We would enjoy home ice against the Philadelphia Flyers; they were the 7th seed in the East. It would all start on May 29th, just as the weather started to heat up in Chicago. I’ve never seen so many folks wearing sweaters in the heat… Yes, the Indian Head never looked better. The stage was set. Let the Finals begin. Go Hawks!
