March 19, 2020: Real Madness

Thursday March 19, 2020… the day that March Madness was supposed to begin. Instead, we have real madness going on with the COVID-19. How messed up do things have to be to cancel March Madness? How messed up do things have to be to close down the Vegas casinos????

Yeah, things pretty much suck right now. Another thing that is quite apparent in all of this is how stupid people really are. We’re “locking down” the cities because people can’t figure this out themselves. Not sure what the next step would be… hopefully we don’t have to get there. Hopefully people listen; be smart. For anyone in an essential service, like me, we’re marching forward, coming into work, being careful. For anyone else, hopefully you can work from home and get paid; feel bad for the folks that lost their jobs over this. Hopefully it will all rebound eventually, but how long will this last???

OK, let’s get to something sports related… well, sort of. With no live sports going on, there have been a lot of throwback games on across the networks; love it! With no live sports going on, my blog has been sustained by the special look at the 2010 Blackhawks. Still going on by the way; the matchup with the Flyers is all that remains there. But in that same vain, and related to March Madness and Vegas, let’s have a throwback March Madness story.

We’re going back to 2004 for this story. Personally, it’s hard to keep the Vegas stories straight. With so many of them, and so much alcohol and stuff involved… But I know the year of this one because it was the year DePaul played Dayton in the tourney; I had to look it up of course. Yeah, we decided to head out to Vegas that year for the Madness, and it just so happened that my alma mater was in the tourney. Of course, we started the party really early on that Thursday morning. After placing all my bets for the early games, I had a stack of free drink tickets; none of them went to waste. We were staying in like a timeshare in the back of the Flamingo; we trashed that place… my buddy never did say if he got an extra bill related to our stay there, so I’m gonna go ahead and assume there was none… haha. Anyways, Depaul and Dayton was in the last group of games for the evening, so by the time that rolled around, we were feeling pretty invincible. Walking around with my DePaul throwback basketball jersey on… crossing the street between Bally’s and Flamingo after the game, yelling at every car passing by, popping my jersey. Yeah, fun times. Then as the rest of the crew arrived that evening, yelling at the top of our lungs in the lobby as they came in through the casino…. What’s up MFers!!! From there, it was back to the room to regroup; it turned into an all out wrestling match. The new arrivals looking at us like we were nuts, as we threw each other around the room, breaking stuff, spilling drinks… it was mayhem.

That was the last thing I remembered that evening… I guess some of the guys went out; I woke up with my empty drink container next to me on the bed….yes, all my clothes were still on. I had lost my ass betting on the games that day, but it didn’t matter. It was an absolute blast; not sure what happened the rest of the trip… it’s always that first day that gets you out there in Vegas. I believe the trip resumed with us outside in the pool the next day about noon with a Fosters in my hand.

Yeah… Vegas… March Madness… it don’t get much better than that. And this year, we have none of it! Sad times I tell you. But, in the big scheme of things, if we all sacrifice a couple months of our “living”, we can all get back to normal, whatever that will be, as soon as possible. Be smart people.
