March 2, 2020: Goodbye 2009

In the final month of 2009, the Blackhawks would record their most wins of the season; 11 wins and 31 days later, the Blackhawks would be sitting 17 games over through the first 40; 27-10-3, 57 points, and on their way. They have certainly lived up to the hype for the first half of the year. We talked about Niemi & Hossa being two of the major contributors in this magical year; let’s look at some of their teammates.

We’re not going 19 & 88 yet, or even 2 & 7. I want to reminisce about some of the other guys. One of the first guys that comes to mind is Dustin Byfuglien. Do we win the Cup without him? Maybe I should have saved this discussion about Dustin until the postseason, which is where he really shined. The physical presence that he brought was huge; he had no problem throwing his weight around. He wasn’t the only one on this team; I think that’s what I liked most about this team. We had guys that mixed it up; we had guys that protected our young stars. Although Dustin had a killer shot, he was at his best in front of the net, with that big body setting screens, tipping shots, pouncing on rebounds, living right in the goalie’s kitchen. My wife and I actually met Dustin; he seemed like a cool guy. It was at “The Fifty” during Halloween. He was dressed up as Super Mario, and didn’t hesitate to take a picture with my wife to be dressed up as SuperGirl. Later we saw him slip behind a curtain with some chick. Good for you Dustin, and thank you for your contributions.

Troy Brouwer; how about him? Maybe you’ve soured on him a bit, seeing him play a big part against us with the Blues in a more recent playoff series loss. Not me. Talk about another big bodied guy with no fear. He had no problem sticking his nose in the middle of any situation. How about Ben Eager? Playing in only 60 games, leading the team in penalty minutes; pretty big goal in the Stanley Cup finals too. These guys, Eager, Brouwer, and Byfuglien, were 1, 4, & 2 respectively in penalty minutes on the year. #3? Andrew Ladd; what a big year he had for us that year. Do we see another common thread with these guys?

Yes, all 4 of them were not on the roster the following year; even previously mentioned Niemi wasn’t back either. But the enforcers if you may… they were all gone. Like I said, these guys were one of the biggest reasons why I liked THIS Blackhawks team more than any of them. They didn’t take no shit. I miss that.

So as the Blackhawks said goodbye to 2009, the 2nd half of the season lay ahead. Unfinished business awaited us in the postseason, which at this point was a certainty. Yeah, easy for me to say now… back then did I have this same belief? Yeah, heck yeah… I know there was still a half a season to play, but this train was rolling. The playoffs weren’t a question; how we’d do when we got there was. But, still plenty of hockey to play. Time to keep the mojo going. Onwards boys…
