My first pick took me right off the pre-draft plan. My son was sitting next to me, basically for the entire draft. One benefit of being out of school is he gets to stay up later now and then during the week. Somebody threw Rizzo out there early; he wanted me to grab him. My first baseman that I target every year is Freddie Freeman. When I got Rizzo, admittedly for a lot cheaper than Freeman went for, the plan immediately changed. The only Cubs hitter that I had planned on getting was Bryant; he’s normally on my brother’s team. I got him this year though… So with my first 2 picks on the offensive side of things gave me the mighty Bryzzo combo. I’m totally fine with that.
I stuck to the script with my first pitcher taken. Jacob deGrom was the man for me last year; I made sure he was on my team again this year. I paid $44 for him, which was the most I paid for anybody; I paid $34 for Bryant and $24 for Rizzo in comparison. From there, I had targeted Chris Paddack; I got him at $19. Yu Darvish was next on my list, but he went over my limit, so I passed. The next two guys on my list I got; Kluber at $17 and Hendricks at $16. The rest of my “starters” were Ryu, Gallen, and Fried. I fill my entire bench with pitching as well; it looks like this: Heaney, Manaea, Richards, Means, and Gausman. I did go off script with my closers. Typically, I will get two $1 closers; I went BIG this year. I got both New York closers: Chapman for $8 and Diaz for $6.
