March 20, 2021: The Return of the Madness

On Friday, it was the return of the madness. March Madness returned after a year hiatus; thanks COVID. I guess it was at that point, and then once Vegas started shutting down, that it was like… I guess this shit is serious. Never in my lifetime had a March Madness been cancelled. It definitely wasn’t the same without it. The fact that it returned on Friday is so good.

Actually, it began on Thursday, and no, not with the 16 game slate, but the First Four play in games. Everything got bumped a day; whatever… as long as it’s back, we’re good. The #1 seeds in the tourney are powerful, with the exception of Michigan in my opinion. And yes, this year it includes Illinois, which will send its 3rd team to the tourney in my lifetime that has a chance to make some noise; more on their results soon. Yeah, the Flying Illini were one of my first favorite college basketball teams of all time; they came up short in the Final Four against Michigan. Then we had the three headed monster of Deron, Dee, and Luther who would fall to NC in the championship game. Would this year’s version be able to top them both? I’m going to say no at this point…

Yeah, I always enjoy filling out the bracket, although I’ve really watched hardly any college bball this year. I’m familiar with a few teams; I’ve read up on a few others earlier this week. I turned my picks into the guy I’ve been sending my picks to for about 20 years; price went up from $10 to $20 a few years back. I’ve only won once, back when Carmelo led the Orange past Kansas. I think I may have won some money the years of the Fab Five; I loved that team too. This year was the first year for my son to pick his winners; all three of us filled out sheets to check off at home. Then my dad, brother, and brother in law filled out sheets for us to compete separately. All and all it’s just a fun time of year. March Madness is one of the only times of year when I’ll actually watch something other than my teams play, like this Friday. I wasn’t sitting on the Bulls game, but instead bouncing around the 4 tourney games in progress, along with the Bulls game; don’t want to talk about that result.

On Friday afternoon, I started texting back and forth with some friends that I’ve known forever, reminiscing about the “good old days” where we’d all take lunch from work and head over to the bar to watch some games. There was a year, or two, when we never made it back to work; bucket after bucket of Coronas helped us make that decision. Yeah, no Coronas this year, but I was able to see the end of the Florida and Virginia Tech game where the hokies hit a 3 with one second left to send it to OT. Yep, it was then really official; the madness is back!!!
