March 22, 2023: Backing Up The Truck

Looking at the Sweet Sixteen, I determined that I would bet on every game; this could be my last hurrah. One of the things that is supposed to help you be successful is money management. There are X number of units you bet on each game; I’ve been pretty good with that so far. Sticking to 1 unit per bet, and that unit being $10; taking it slow. Of course, there is the whole live betting thing that can pile up… in your favor at times, but more than not, against you. If you add those plays with the main play, it could add up. The most I’ve lost on a single game thus far was 4.5 units; it’s a far stretch from the $350 I lost on a Bears playoff game back in the day. I’ve been surprisingly discipline, yet… where has that got me? I said I was going to do this for fun, and it has been, but you want to win; it would be cool to have this little extra income. Well, my patience has been wearing thin; my decision making hasn’t been the greatest, especially with the live betting. So… I told myself, when I see a game I love, I’m going to go big; I would be backing up the truck on the UCLA Gonzaga Sweet 16 matchup.

I was waiting for a spot like this; a game that I really, really loved… a team that has been very, very good to me. One of the things I’ve kind of learned, although I keep doing it, is don’t bet on shit teams, hoping they can pull an upset. Stick to the teams that know how to win; UCLA knows how to win. UCLA has won me a lot of dough since I’ve been back; I’ve been winning on pre-game bets AND in-game bets with the Bruins. If it wasn’t for them, I may have already been broke, but… I’m still here; thank you UCLA. And now, it’s time to make a move. I think of the movie Rounders; hopefully you’ve seen it. Matt Damon is sick of the grind, and decides to take a stand against Teddy KGB; he gets cleaned out. He gives up gambling, and has to start stacking his dough again. Of course, he ends up in even worse shape before making a comeback by the end of the movie; love that flick. Yeah, let me push all my chips into the middle of the table and see what happens; if I lose, I lose. I’m still playing with house money you know…

How much should I bet? I thought about putting my whole balance on the game; that would be a total of 23 units. I told myself at least 10 units; no doubt about it. I ended up settling on an original 5 unit play, coupled with two more 1 unit plays; heading into the UCLA Gonzaga matchup, I had $70 riding on the Bruins. It’s not exactly backing up the truck; it’s definitely not all in. But for this guy, in the Draft Kings era of sports betting, this would be my single largest bet. I felt very confident about it…
