March 24, 2020: The Ex Factor

Game 2 was next at the UC. I watched a few highlights to jog my memory a bit. This game would be different than the first. It wouldn’t be a high scoring shootout, but instead, a low scoring contest, which at the end of the day, would be determined by the play of the goalies. Good thing we had Niemi…

The Flyers had Michael Leighton. If you recall, he was an ex-Blackhawk player. Any time that a player on an opposing team used to play for us, I worry, especially in a big moment. In this case, watch this guy come in and stand on his head and lead the Flyers to victory. Yeah, the Hawks drafted him back in 1999. He ended up playing 42 games for the Blackhawks, before finally ending up with the Flyers. He was coming off an outstanding series, setting a record for shutouts in a playoff series against the Canadiens in the Eastern Conference Finals with three; wow! And then Game 1 against the Hawks happened… whole new world buddy. He did end up playing 1 more game for the Blackhawks in the 2015-2016 season… and 5 games for the Chicago Wolves a couple years later. He was OK in this game; he stopped 24 of 26 shots in this one. It wouldn’t be good enough.

Leighton wasn’t the only one with connections to both teams. The Flyers had a couple other guys who wound up playing on and winning Cups with the Blackhawks with Daniel Carcillo and Kimmo Timmonen. Heading into this series, I remember all the talk about Chris Pronger; he didn’t do crap this series. The guy I remember ending up hating more and more as the series went on was Carcillo. He was one of those guys that gets under your skin; hate playing against him, but love when somebody like that is on your team. Speaking of guys like that… what about ex-Flyer Ben Eager? Yeah, I loved that guy. He scored the 2nd Blackhawks goal in this one, which ended up being the deciding factor. Sweet wrist shot top shelf… The other ex-Flyer of course was Patrick Sharp; how good was this guy? He had those bursts of speed and stick handling. He would go through some scoring slumps, but then he’d be red hot. I actually did not remember that he missed the empty net late in this one that would have sealed it; he hit the post… thankfully, it didn’t matter.

Yeah, with all those ex-factors in the game, there was one true X factor, and that was Antti Niemi. We’ve talked about him before, but he deserves it. In this one, he saved 32 out of 33 shots… and from the highlights that I rewatched, there were a couple “ten-bellers” as Eddie O likes to say. Although both goalies improved on their Game 1 performance, ours was flat out better… and that will win you some games; that was the main reason the Blackhawks won 2-1, which would give them a 2-0 lead in this series. At the end of the day, all that means is that we took care of home ice; next up, was a trip to Philly… ready?
