March 24, 2021: It Was Just a Dream

Yeah, dreaming again… actually another fantasy… fantasy baseball that is, ’tis the season. The best day of the fantasy baseball season was last week: the draft! This year was no exception.

I had my plan together; I probably spend about an hour prepping, besides the time I’m scrolling through my phone reading this or that. The most important thing in any draft is the ability to stay flexible. You are NOT going to get every guy you want, even if it is an auction league like mine. You will be guided to get guys that weren’t on your list; that’s OK too. This draft had a perfect example of each.

Some jerk threw Baez out immediately as the first player up for bid. He was on my list, although wasn’t a must have. I knew I would have some Cubs eventually, didn’t want to go all in on the first one, the first overall player in the draft… so I didn’t. Next up came Tatis Jr; he was NOT on my list, however, my son was sitting next to me. He loves Tatis Jr. He told me to bid on him; I listened. The bidding went higher; he told me keep bidding. I did. I told him one more dollar; that was all it took. I have Fernando Tatis Jr on my team now, which actually is not a bad thing, as long as he doesn’t get hurt. This turned out to be an important development getting him, since the offensive player I really wanted, I didn’t get.

Yes, Freddie Freeman… love that guy. I wanted him, just like I do every year, except this year, some guy wouldn’t stop bidding on him… just like me. The bidding went ridiculously high… about 20% over the average. I finally had to stop, and let him go. Thankfully, I already had one offensive stud in the stable; plenty of other first baseman to go. I ended up getting three of them with Rizzo, Olson, and Bell. Of course I got my #1 pitcher in deGrom. For whatever reason, people don’t bid him up… that’s cool with me. I ended up getting a Dodger (yuck!) with Walker Buehler, along with Kyle Hendricks, who is a regular on my team; of course I snagged Jake too. Jake, Kyle, and Anthony are the 3 Cubs on my team this year; I’m OK with that.

d’Arnaud, Sean Murphy, Dylan Moore, Matt Chapman, Carlos Correa, and Dansby Swanson round out my position players as if you care. My outfield includes Santander, Yaz, Buxton, Lewis, Haniger, Nimmo, and Reynolds. The rest of my pitching staff comes in with Gausman, Means, MadBum, Skubal, Sale, and Thor. Both of my closers already got hurt in Yates and LeClerc; I replaced them with Romano and Smith. Since I moved Sale and Thor to the IL, I scooped up 2 more starters in Smyly and Kremer. I like my team… I like my team a lot.

It’s only $20; I wish it were a lot more. 2nd place last year, 1st place the year before… I love fantasy baseball. Just like I don’t mind the long games, I don’t mind the every day checking. What the hell else am I going to look at when I’m sitting on the toilet? Go Curse Busters!
