March 26, 2020: Best of Three

posted in: Blackhawks | 0

After a day off in Philly, the Blackhawks would resume the Stanley Cup Finals against the Flyers. All those years, all those games without a win in this city. Game 4 would be no different. The Flyers had a 2 goal lead after the first period. Although the Blackhawks didn’t lay down, they never held a lead. After an empty netter, the Flyers took Game 4 by a score of 5-3. The series was evened up. It was now a best of three series.

Was it time to panic? All that has been done thus far in this series is the holding of serve. Both teams won both their home games. If that pattern were to continue, the Blackhawks would be raising the Cup in 3 games. Sure, I’d prefer that it didn’t get to 7, but if that’s what it takes, so be it.

We’ve been here before. In that first round, what seems like years ago at this point, the Blackhawks and Predators were tied at 2 heading back to the UC for Game 5; that one turned out OK. The first round the year before against the Flames, same situation. Series tied at 2, heading back to the UC, Hawks win. In both those cases, the Hawks would prevail in 6 games. Even last year’s 2nd round series against the Canucks was tied at 2 only this time Game 5 was to be played on the road; another Hawks win, another series closeout win in Game 6. You seeing a pattern here?

This was familiar from another one of our Championship teams with the Bulls as well. In 1992, Bulls Knicks tied at 2; Bulls would win Game 5 at home, at that time the Stadium, then close the Knicks out in 7. Bulls Cavs in the following series tied at 2; Bulls win Game 5 at home then close out the series in 6. In the Finals, Bulls Blazers tied at 2, Bulls would win Game 5 in Portland then close them out in 6. Bulls Knicks the following year; Knicks took the first two games before the Bulls stormed back for 4 straight. I’m sure there are examples when this didn’t work out in our favor, but I’m not going to look those up…

I’m sure the Blackhawks were happy to be leaving that house of horrors; the United Center faithful would be a welcome sight for a team looking to grab the series lead back. The city was still in a frenzy; the focus was completely on the Blackhawks. We had built up a good amount of hate for the Flyers for tying this thing up; how dare they. I guess they didn’t get the memo… that THIS would be our year. They would get a final reminder in a couple days. Back to the UC for Game 5… Go Hawks!
