We Are Family was the name of the 1979 episode of Baseball Seasons, referring to the popular song that the Pirates took as their own on their way to a World Series title; at least it wasn’t the Yankees and Dodgers again. Actually, there would be 4 new teams in the postseason that year; always good to see some new blood. It would be the Orioles and Angels in the ALCS and the Pirates and Reds in the NLCS.
As far as the Yankees go, they would endure a tragedy during the season when Thurman Munson died in a plane crash. Sports is an emotional thing; this Yankee team was all emotions, good and bad. Thurman Munson was one of the leaders in that crazy clubhouse; losing him really took its toll. Although the first game back without him, was pretty cool. One of the guys speaking at his eulogy was Bobby Murcer, who had returned to the Yankees earlier that year. After the ceremony, they flew back to New York to play the Orioles. Down 4-0, it was none other than Bobby Murcer who hit a 3 run home run to cut the deficit to one. And oh yeah, then he hit a walk off 2 run single in the 9th inning. How cool is that? We’ve seen stuff like this happen in sports a lot. The one that comes to mind is Brett Favre on MNF against the Raiders after his father died. Now, I can’t stand the Packers and thus Brett Favre, but that was a cool moment… 311 yards and 4 TDs in the first half?!?! Yeah, it’s hard for that one to not hit home; have to respect that one. Murcer’s performance after the death of his friend was another one. This death theme actually carried into the World Series.
In the ALCS, the Orioles beat the Angels 3-1. The amount of exciting games in this postseason was crazy. In Game 1, John Lowenstein hit a walk off 3 run HR in the 10th inning for the Orioles. In Game 2, down 9-0, the Angels stormed back with 8 runs in the last 4 innings coming up just short. In Game 3, the Angels walked off with 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th to get their only victory of the series. Game 4 was an 8-0 whitewash. In the NLCS, the familiar foes the Reds and Pirates faced off. The Reds beat the Pirates in each of the last 3 meetings in the NLCS, in 1970, 1972, & 1975; this time would be different, again in exciting fashion. A 3 run homer by Stargell in the 11th inning was the difference in Game 1. In Game 2, it was Parker with the game winning single in the 10th inning. In the third game of the sweep, another blowout in the series deciding game, 7-1.
