March 5, 2021: Hello 80s

Moving right along, watching the 1980 Baseball Seasons episode. They started off featuring the best third baseman in the game: Mike Schmidt & George Brett. 3B was the position I wanted to play, other than pitcher, when I began to play baseball. You had to be ready to go on the “Hot Corner”. I moved around to SS, 1B, and OF, but outside of pitching, 3B remained my favorite position. It was fun to see these 2 guys featured, 2 HOFers that would eventually meet for all the marbles at the end of the 1980 season.

Their teams, the Phillies and the Royals, had been oh so close in the late 70s. The Phillies lost in 3 straight NLCS’ heading into 1980. The Royals had lost 3 straight ALCS’ in 1976, 77, and 78 all to the Yankees. Sometimes it takes coming up just short to propel a team to that next level; sometimes it takes more than just one time. When you get that close so many times, and you can’t get over the hump, the pressure builds. If this team that has had so much success just cannot get to the top of the mountain, what do you do? Well, the Phillies had made it clear before the season that the team would be blown up if they couldn’t do it; I guess it worked.

If you don’t like it, then you’ve only wasted five hours of your life…well maybe more if you want foreplay” “I just took a order levitra online http://robertrobb.com/light-rail-doesnt-create-economic-growth/. The teams on the other side of the Championship Series’ were the Yankees, again, and a newbie in the Houston Astros. I like how George Brett talked about his hate for the Yankees; that’s how it should be. I’ve always liked Brett, but as I watch more of his highlights, especially how he performed on the biggest stage, I’m liking him even more. Oh yeah, 1980 was the year he almost hit .400, which would have been the first time since Ted Williams. He hit another home run in this ALCS against the Yankees, and this time, the Royals actually put their demons to rest by beating the Evil Empire. The Astros Phillies NLCS is said to be one of the best of all time. That’s the one thing I’m noticing as I’m watching more and more of these; back in the day, you had some classic, classic matchups; guys were laying it all on the line, giving it 110%, really, really wanting to win. I’m not saying it’s not like that today… well, I guess I’m saying that a little bit; it just doesn’t seem the same. Maybe it’s because you had guys play their entire careers with teams vying for the crown year after year… building up that want after years of coming up short; I don’t know. It went the full 5 games, with the last 4 going to extra innings. The Phillies came from behind in each of the last two games to win, including scoring 5 runs in the 8th inning of Game 5 to take a 2-run lead, only to be tied by the Astros in the bottom of the frame. The back and forth was awesome, and I’m sure gut wrenching for both fan bases. When it was all said and done, it was the Royals and Phillies; one of these teams would finally do it.

George Brett and the Royals would have to wait. World Series MVP Mike Schmidt and the Phillies would get it done in 6 games. The Phillies came from behind in 3 of their 4 wins in the Series. It was definitely their year. I’m still not to the point where I actually remember stuff that happened, but I’m close. Can’t wait to watch the next one.
